Default pawnshop m38

just went to browse yesterday and some guy was looking at a mosin but put it back. I went and took a look and notice they have it marked as a russian m44. it's a m38 with a m38 stock, I pulled the upper hand guard and didnt find any import Mark's. I believe it's a izhevsk. the front sight is missing the ring around the post a d theres a small piece of wood missing from the front of the stock. also has the brass end caps on the upper handguard. none of the numbers match. bore looks great for a rifle made in 1942. Even haggled it down a bit and got it for just under $180 out the door. jim

You don’t see M38’s too often. At least I don’t. Good find.

Any signs it spent time in Finland? Could have the boxed SA or some other marking. This would explain also why the numbers don't match and why the front sight hood is gone.
If so, could have been imported a good long while back by Interarms.

Also, check under the rear sight leaf. Back when, some importers put their marking there.

Either way, gotta say the M38 is my favorite Russian Mosin variant.
Back around 2002-2004, a large batch came in from CAI, but otherwise, they've been pretty uncommon. At least compared with M91/30s and M44s.
Then again, just look at production numbers for those variants vs those for the M38.

I like how light and handy the carbine is, and not as cluttered as the M44. Also, the M38 seems a little better made than some M44s.

Mosins in general don't get the love like Mausers or even Enfields, but damn do they have their place in history.

That's a good find if the barrel is in good shape! Probably be counterbored but that's o.k. - I would buy another one at that price in a heartbeat!

Nice find on the mixmaster M38. Hopefully a good shooter. Post some pics when you figure out how that works. There is an ap on this site that works AFAIK.

I used to seek out and collect the short barreled Mosin Nagant models. Along with 91/30's and ex-snipers.

Have all the Russian production years 1943-1948 and XO, MO and double dates etc.
91/59's
91/38 (an 1899 dated model that still shoots quite well)
M44 types from China, (T53), Hungary, Poland, Romania, Yugoslavian rework
M38's

Always like the look and feel of the carbine types. They do kick and flash more than the longer barrel versions.

At one time they were pretty inexpensive to find and collect. Even at the Sporting Goods type big box stores and gun shows or on line.

There were M38s in Vietnam, so possibly a bring back if it truly is without an import mark, or it could have been imported right after WW2, or even be a bring back from that period. Although without provenence it doesn't mean much.

Import markings have changed over time., in pre 1968 none required. Then in 2002 the location, size and depth were officially changed. They are the current "billboard" scrawl.
S
Some in previous years were very small on the barrel just behind the front site etc.

Some slipped by the importer stamp as well/ I have a couple of unmarked Mosin Nagant and SKS rifles that missed the stamp operation.
