Lets do it!! I will help you to get an official invitation from SACRA and then get import permits for your rifles. Then you fly to Johannesburg and then Bloemfontein a couple of days before the competition and I will get you there. My farm is only 80 miles from the shooting range. I will take you through the drills and tables and practice a bit. (BTW, I am privileged to be the range officer for the national championships for the 11th year this year.) We can also do some hunting if you are interested.
Wow that would really be something. Im on board for probably 2020. Next year Im already booked for a Anniversary. I can think of a few guys who be interested.

Got some interesting R Series pics Ive put together on pinterest if anyone is interested.

The pics are cool, if you look at all the wood Handguard R4s many have the carry handle....seems like it would be fitting to have a wood handguard with Carry handle on a clone

Carry handle pics

Both of these soldiers have handles on their R4. If you look carefully the Soldier on his back has his thumb in between the handle and handguard.

Obvious handle here......Wish I had a box full of wood handguards....Very cool

Interesting video Ron. Quite a few my fellow Troopers decided to go to Rhodesia and Angola in the late 70’s to “work” on farms. (Cough). There was a heavy bonus for Ski-Soldiers. This brought on a shortage of $350. HK’s, 1911’s and Colt Pythons in the nearby town of Fayetteville NC

Interesting times for a young soldier stationed at Ft Bragg.

Yes the history on all this is quite interesting. Even I am learning things the deeper I loom into it.

It did come out very nice. Total over the top replication!

Now if I could trust someone to replicate the wood R4 handguard Id send one of mine over but it would need to be someone trusted and who wouldnt damage it.

Anybody?

Makman90 you have any suggestions?

I can't do it & I don't know anyone. In any case, could you post a pic of the wood R4 handguard so we can see the difference?

BTW, very nice!

Carry handles on R1 and R4 rifles were called gippo handles in the SA army and the instructors hated it, because the clever soldiers hooked the handle into their belts when marching with shouldered rifles to take the weight off their arms. You could immediately spot the guy with the gippo handle in the belt, because the rifle was hanging lower with the barrel forward. That is why the instructors had the handles removed. On the R1 they just broke it off. In a training unit you would never see a handle on a rifle.

Look at the start of the video clip. The black soldiers running to the Puma helicopter have cammo uniforms and the carry R1's and AK's. Those were Portuguese speaking ex- Angolans who joined the SA army. The unit was 32 Batallion. 32 BN had its own winter and summer cammo uniform and you could choose between a R1 and an AK. (I had a brand new blond milled receiver Hungarian AK). Our AK ammunition was brass cased SA manufactured. At that time The army still used brown nutria uniforms and most infantry units were already issued with R4 or Galil rifles.
After the "war" those poor soldiers and their families were dumped on a abandoned un-rehabilitated asbestos mine, Pomfret. Sorry if I am derailing the thread.

It JUST occurred to me that the difference between the R4 & Galil handguard is that the R4 is longer! I should know, I have one of each!
