Default Is it possible to over pack an ammo can?

Is it possible to over pack an ammo can with ammo?

I found a thread on AR-15.com that showed how a guy packed 1000 rounds of 7.62x39 Golden Tiger/Tula/Wolf ammo in a single 50 cal. can. This was the standard size 50 cal. can, not the "fat cans." They were packed in the original boxes.

Is it possible to pack so much ammo in a can to interfere with the gasket sealing? Do you guys use any type of silicone grease(safe for rubber) on the ammo can gasket, or leave it dry?

If you're bending the ammo can lid, you're bending cartridges.

Leave the gasket dry.

If you throw your back out it’s definitely too full, of whatever your stacking is within a 1/4” of the top your pretty much too full

Ugh - Fifty-Cal cans full of ammo are a shoulder-dislocator. Try to pick up one in one hand and a rifle or bag of gear in the other. How fast can you walk, much less run?

I use thirty-cal cans, and then load each with a mix of calibers for the guns I have. This way, regardless of which cans or how many - then whatever guns I have with me wiill have some supply.

close it and open it back up. If the boxes inside are crushed, you've probably hit the line.

I have a couple of 50 cal cans that have a case of GT in them. You have to lego them in there and stack them just right but it's possible without causing any damage to the ammo or the can.

I've only been able to do that with GT though. I think their boxes are just slightly smaller than the others. Most of them I can only get 900-940 in there.

GT and Wolf Gold 223 no problems getting a case in there without any damage to boxes or bending lids if you know how to fit the puzzle together. It's just how much do you want to lift? There's no law requiring cans to be full to the brim.

Golden Tiger, Tula (20 rnd), Herters, and Hot Shot will all stack for 1000 rnds in a .50 can. There may be others, but these are the ones I know of.

Edit: These are all 7.62x39.

Pretty sure there are pics of how to get 1000 rounds in boxes in a 50 here: http://www.akfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92652

Yeah that's where I found the link to the AR-15.com thread, but I could not get the pics to post. Maybe someone can add them to this thread?

I have no problems fitting 1000 wolf or tulammo in one of these cans. When you take the rounds out of the packaging, they're all pretty much the same size.

This is true, but the OP states "They were packed in the original boxes".

+1

I have a few .50 cal cans with 1000 rounds of 7.62X39 in them. They're not in the original 20 round boxes with the paper, they are loose packed

You can over-pack a ziplock baggie, but you can't over-pack a steel ammo can. Just sayin'

Not trying to be a smartass but did you see the top stickied post in this forum? I am assuming that you mean in relation to
ammo...correct?

Page 4 I stack 1200 rounds 7.62x39 in a 50 cal with pics. Sucked with new tula packaging but I got a good system down for standard boxes.

Fits better than 1000 loose, and I'm always afraid the boxes will hold moisture.

Need to buy some 30's for carrying, I'm not lugging those 1200 50's anywhere.
