Default 5.45 to 5.56

So, I'm not sure how it happened, but I find myself with three 5.45 rifles.

I've been intrigued with the idea of a 5.56 AK, but have missed the boat on most of the reasonably priced new 5.56 rifles. I also see 5.56 mags are recently readily available.

Of the three, the only candidate I'm seriously considering is a Century M74. The others are a WASR 2, and a milled WW. They all run well and shoot straight.

What's the general consensus? Should I proceed, take a different approach, or abandon the idea entirely?

As you've just demonstrated a very large lapse in judgement / decision making skills, I'm gonna suggest you drop the project entirely before someone gets hurt.

A decision to add a 5.56 AK is a good one that more and more 74 guys are finding out. Get the m90np or spring the extra for a 106fr.

The Century M74 often has the wrong rivets in the front trunnion, causing it to come loose in the receiver.

The SAR2 / WASR2 can use an AIMS74 5.56 CONVERSION barrel.

Those are available.

Many 5.56 AK magazines are too wide for an AK74 magwell, but some will fit.

The magwell could be opened up for the wider magazines, but may not turn out as nice looking as the factory magwell.

The WASR mag well isn't terrible-but it ain't real pretty.

The WASR is too tight for a PMAG, but is fine with circle 10 and most other surplus mags.

I only have about 500 or so through the M74. How soon would one expect this rivet problem to become apparent?

Am I correct in thinking having the front rivets inspected or replaced in conjunction with a barrel change would be a small matter?

With the M74 remove the gas tube and remove the lower hand guard and hold the receiver in one hand and the barrel in the other hand and see if there is any play between them.

I'll do that tonight.

No discernable movement whatsoever.

I like shooting 5.45x39 but I think having a good .223 in the collection isn’t a bad idea. I mainly shoot my AKs outdoors but when it’s cold none of my indoor ranges allow steel case so I break out the Saiga and run some cheap Wolf Gold.

And I never would have guessed that 7N6 would get banned. That changed the whole 5.45 game for me. I didn’t walk away but if you’re already stockpiling .223 why not have an AK to shoot it? Around here it’s still the #1 easiest rifle round to find on the shelf. Yea, I buy all mine online for cheap, but I don’t know what’s gonna happen in the future.

I got 13k of 5.45 rounds and even if I will shot 1k per year it will last 13 years if not longer, considering number of firearms it is pretty much all I need. I woulld never substitute 5.45 with 5.56 which is just another caliber and another AK in my collection.

AKs in US caliber are a good option to have around.

Dimpled Saiga in .223. AK101 clone. Get um’ while they’re reasonably cheap.

Do a kit build . Set it up to run weiger mags .

A 223 AK is a joy to shoot with a good barrel.

I'd venture to say there's enough 5.45 ammo in the US to last a long time. As the popularity continues to decrease, more shooters will sell off their stashes creating more availability. It's really turning into a secondary market caliber. I picked up a sealed crate for $400 locally today. Deals are still out there. There's absolutely no reason to abandon the 5.45. However, if I found a nice 106f w/o the rail at a good price I would grab it to add to the collection. Only downside would be having to stock up on the mags.

I'm absolutely keeping two in 5.45.

I'm thinking about changing the M74 over because I've never shot a 5.56 AK and I find the idea intriguing.

OTOH the M74 is fine as is, so it might be s dumb idea to mess with it.

Seems to me one of those nitrided 5.56 barrels for Bulgarian 74s might be a fairly straight forward change out.

We've got 2 Academy store here so so far off the shelf 5.45 is readily available.

I don't see much 7N6 around here, and it's usually kind of high when I do.

Arsenal SLR-106 variants are what you're looking for.

I wanted to take this opportunity to point out what a horrible influence you all are.

First no one confirmed my conclusion I had too many 74s.

Second no one seconded my idea of converting the M 74 to 5.56.

Third and worst of all, many encouraged me to buy all manner of 5.56 AKs, further aggravating my dilemma.

So I've made a decision based on something I saw today:

I put a deposit down on a used but (apparently) unfired M90MP which I'll probably pick up tomorrow.

Hogue grip and forearm, and (I think) an Ace folder (definitely not CNC warrior).

I need to stay off this board.

You should really like the zastava m90Np, built like a tank and has the chromed barrel unlike other Serbian's. Mine has been GTG and replaced that funky stock.

What are the models on the top 6? Is that three different SLR104's and three SGL31's?

And @nalioth, since when is 1280x850 a huge image? You need to update the board to handle photos better man. This is 2018 and photos aren't getting any smaller, nor are people's monitors

That's odd.

I do all my 'filing on my phone, and it didn't seem like a large photo.

I guess my browser is scaling it?

Beautiful collection BTW.

Do you have rifles in 7.62 as well or are you all in on 5.45? And yeah that collection is awesome.
