Default [How to] Unlimited private messages on AK Files ( keep all your PMs )

Do you want to keep all your PMs forever?

Tired of sending folks a PM, deleting it and needing it later?

This thread can help you with that.

No need to be a nerd, this is easy as pie.

First off, we need to go to our Private Message window:

When you see this page, scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page . . .

. . . and you'll see the circled elements. You can click the "Download all private messages as" txt option. This will spawn a download of all your private messages ( both inbox and sentbox ) in a text file. This text file can be read in any text editor ( For example, Notepad or Wordpad ) or word processing program. The "csv" and "xml" options exist if you want to use your PMs with a spreadsheet program.

You can take a minute or three to verify all your PMs are to be found in your new text document.

All the PMs in the text file? Good. Here's where we start clearing out the PM box.

Navigate back to the top of the page, and I'll show you two options for clearing out all those PMs.

Option #1: Checking this box will cause the board to check all visible PMs on the page. If using this option, skip to the next section.

Options #2: This is the nuclear option. It will delete al of your PMs from whatever box you're looking at ( you'll need to switch to the other mailbox and do it again for a clean sweep )

If you're using option #1, you will now have a whole row of checked boxes. Scroll down and find the "Selected Messages" options, and choose "Delete". This will delete all checked messages.. This is the slow method ( as you'll have to go a page at a time in both mailboxes to clean all of it out ) of deleting PMs.

Using this information, you can now keep every last one of your PMs ( never delete single PMs to make room in your mailbox again ).

Notes:

- Deleted PMs are irrecoverable

- The text file downloaded may be compressed with zip or rar or other compression software for easier storage.

-- For *nix folks, the zipped text files may be searched with zgrep or other utilities designed to see inside zip files

Good info. I may utilize this in the future. Been doing pretty good thus far without though. Maybe make this a sticky thread.

Wish I played around more to figure this out earlier. Oh well, still useful. Thanks!

This should work on any VBulletin discussion board.

You can use vbulletin pm reader to load the exported xml's into and read them if you're running windows. It's an old app, but it runs all the way up to win10 64bit.

http://download.cnet.com/vBulletin-P...-10612431.html

Easiest way to use it is to have it make a DB for each forum, and you load your xml exports into it. It's not the best app in the world, search doesn't work, but it's easier than trying to load up X number of xml's one at a time looking for stuff.
