Thanks for the comments. I agree on the RD-54 being hard to find anymore and the pictured vest is pretty uncommon too.
I sourced this info on it from from another collector site:

VDV BVD (БВД, "Боевая Выкладка Десантника")
The BVD was apparently first issued in the early-to-mid 80's during the war in Afghanistan where it was used mostly by air- and helicopterborne units both of the armed forces and border guards. The idea behind the vest was to combine the load bearing equipment and rucksack into one. Sounds like a good idea, but unfortunately the end result was not the best. Still, these were widely used throughout Afghanistan and continued to see service in both Chechen wars up until the 2000's.
It consists of the following-
Front:

Three pouches for two magazines each.
Four first aid dressing/hand grenade pouches.
One larger chest pouch, fits a water bottle.
One pouch for two handheld signal flares.
One pouch for two handheld signal smokes.

Rear:

One large pouch for a R-392 radio and battery.
One pouch for a VDV canteen-messtin combo.
Two pouches apparently for a gas mask and filter.
Smaller pouches, apparently for ammunition.
Tie downs on the hem for a Plash-Palatka

Although I 've seen pictures of other ones, this is the only original one I've ever come across.

thanks,

The barrel is a Mcgowen Precision stainless. I had them contour it close to spec so that Duffy's Gun Room in Sparks,MD could do all the rest of the work. they're top notch if you need AK work done of any kind.

That's good to know.

You planning to run it in the DMR match in May at PNTC? It's a two day match on 5 and 6 May with steel out to 800, per the RO email I got from Tom last night.

I used my SVD in the last PRS match of the year as I RO'd it and didn't see it as wasting a match fee. While it was fun, 174gr SMKs leaving the barrel at 2500fps were not the ticket for impacts on small steel at distance, haha. Yours probably has a good chance at doing well though.

haha, yeah they were dropping like a rock at 800 for sure. I am a member at PNTC. I haven't considered doing a PRS match at this point because I haven't worked up a load in either this rifle or my grendel AR. I have all my long range rifles qualified for any range there, but with factory ammo. Factory grendel is hard to find and 1 dollar a bullet, so if i can get a temp stable load worked out for one of these two I will go. the grendel is even supersonic out to the 1000 line with a 130. I want to get the new 150 grain sierra(.713 BC) going 2900 out of this barrel if I can keep it accurate. If i can do that i will be able to hit any target with hold over from my 100 yard zero with room to spare.

The PRS match in Nov had a few targets at 1200y, so my dial and holds nearly ran out of clicks and reticle for the SVD. Tied for 12th out of 15 ROs, but definitely had more fun than any of the bolt gun guys, haha.

Sounds like you need to get this rifle mated up with some handloads and sign up for a PRS or DMR match to really see what it'll do. I wonder if the 130gr Berger AR Hybrids might be better for the Vepr as they are apparently insensitive to jump and would allow you to stay within mag length and not worry about chasing the lands. Might be a non issue with your aftermarket barrel though.

I always hand load nowadays. factory ammo can do great things, but its just not the same. Ive found that Bergers either like to be almost in the lands or way off. My 300 WM is a factory 1/2 minute gun, but the throat is so long I can load to 3.6" and not touch the lands when spec is 3.34". I load at 3.43 so the 230 gr berger is jumping that far and still crazy accurate for a factory rifle. I will play around and test extensively at 1000 before I dream of doing a match. Ive never done one before so I don't want any doubts of the rifles capability when I do. I load those in my grendel AR, still finding the right powder, speed, and barrel time though. maybe one day ill see you out there. maybe I'm being dramatic, but its hard to be comfortable at a sport you've never done.
