Guy here in Bakersfield does it for $40. Probably a bit longer of a drive than Sylmar.

Being just a state requirement and not a federal requirement, I would consider putting the serial number on a piece of sheet metal and then attach it to the receiver.

Placement down't seem to be an issue.

Maybe a spot welded pistol grip plate, or just have share some trunnion rivets or engrave it on the side scope rail.

The state statute requires that it meets the federal standard.

so I have marked up my receivers.

Contact the BATF.

I know there were some custom gunsmith back in the day that worked on old GI guns. In their work, they tended to destroy the serial number. They had to get a waver from the ATF so they could re-serial number it.

I forget the smiths name, but it seems like it might have been a double action conversion where they had to mill out the right side of the frame.

Glocks meet federal standards.

Imported AK's get serial numbers on the riveted trunnion because US-made ones require a serial number as soon as production starts, not later, when a trunnion is attached.

If it is already attached, it's just good having the serial number there.

If the numbers are big enough and deep enough, they meet the standards.

How they get there doesn't matter.

The other thing is you can put whatever you want it sounds like.

If you ever want to update it or refine, you could make another receiver with the exact same markings.

It looks acceptable though.

The state requires that a FMBUS (firearm built by unlicensed subject) use a state issued serial number in order to be registered as a BBRAW. So, you canít just use any random number like what is on the trunion.

I actually requested my serial numbers to match my trunion but they just ignored that

Somebody from the state would have to determine if the markings meet the rather vague federal rules.

Also to be fair about, it also apply that the markings would have meet federal rules at the time the firearm was made.

Who determines when a home build or not a home build was made?

That would seem difficult to do.

It sounds like that could open the door for stolen or illegal firearms to have the factory markings illegally removed and state appointed numbers and markings applied.

That would be a federal felony.

More likely ( and legally ), there'd just be two sets of numbers on the gun.

Yes, but sounds like it could be easily hidden with a new state issued serial number.

What about home builds that were once legal short barreled rifles and taken off NFA and have the barrels extended?

Can they use the home builders' markings and serial numbers, or do they get a new state issued number, since they are home builds with home builder's serial number.

Even the federal government recognizes home build numbers and markings.

Actually, if there is a serial number applied by a FMBUS that is not a DOJ issued ser number, you are to just add the state issued ser and leave the previous serial number.

Removing a ser from a receiver is a federal no-no

That's true about removing serial numbers, but a home builder can add whatever number he wants to his builds.
