Default Sam Gabbert’s new ras hollowpoints

Didn’t see any range reports on the 124 gr hollowpoints, Sam says new item for him, these have massive cavities- wonder if this means better expansion w less penetration depth or simply more tumbling. I have shot the relatively soft point heavier bullets, though they load like crap, so do some hollowpoints in my rpk. Some say hp are a bit more accurate, i didnt see that. I have jammed several bullets a bit deeper in the case for comfort so i have been sticking to fmj for fun and my deer rifle for hunting. Still mulling a bolt action for this caliber, my hunting grounds limit shots to useful distances anyway.... .

I just saw that in Sam's newsletter today. It definitely caught my eye, but I need more information before considering a purchase. His Tula 8M3 is great stuff.

That's great to know, but what does that have to do with the topic?

Interesting. I wonder if the air cavity is larger than standard Vympel FMJ rounds. I'd have to see a side by side section I guess.

If you're going to get a bolt action, why not get one that shoots a cartridge known for precision shooting instead of 7.62x39mm? Are you going to be shooting so many rounds with a bolt action that ammo cost is a significant decider?

Read Op's post ,this is a quote ....

"my hunting grounds limit shots to useful distances anyway"

My take is Op wants to use a 7.62x39 round . Who cares if it's the best all around round ? I shot a deer 2 years ago with one ,dropped after a few steps. I think it's about variety after shooting deer for a number of years, not about whats best.

7.62x39 is only thought to be a non-precision round because of it's native hosts.

It is a precision round in a precision rifle. With handloads my rifle (CZ527) has no problem with 0.6 MOA groups.

But the point still stands. The commercial ammo in 7.62x39mm isn't known for accuracy or consistency. It's known for being cheap. The 7.62x39mm is not a long range round with a flat trajectory. There aren't very many precision guns that shoot it. It wouldn't be my choice of cartridge for a bolt gun to take hunting (though I'm sure it will work fine at short ranges).

I am sure MOA up to 200-250yds is adequate for deer and boar (med sized game). My Remington 30.06 pump (old school) shoots about the same groups as my cz 527 @ 100yds. But for longer possible ranges ,the 06 gets the nod. Where I hunt deer ,a slug gun is all thats needed.
