I'm looking for a chest rig.
Want it to hold at least 4 AK mags. (Plus maybe just a few other small pockets). Nothing too large or extravagant. Prefer surplus but would consider new production if it's less than $75. Where should I start shopping around? I checked Sportsmans Guide and was pretty disappointed. Thank you! |

Keep Shooting; Major Surplus are both one that may carry the Chinese Chest Rigs. There are likely some other sources for the modern up-dated version in nylon type materials. I've ordered some a few months ago and they were not out-rageously expensive ($15 to $25 or less). Just basic Chest Rigs. No Frills, but they can be modified with some ingenuity and wider and padded supplemental straps if need be.
The older style heavier canvas Chinese Chest Rig is the better of the two major material styles, but again, both can be modified and even reinforced with some thought and - don't spread it around - not a lot of thought nor ingenuity. I order chest rigs on occasion; every couple or three months I'll look at them or bargains, and about every six months or so I'll purchase a rig or two that I like. Can disperse them with assets to stash points, and the Chinese ones do not break the bank.. |

^ He covered it quite well.
Here are a couple rigs to view: http://www.akfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=217881 Best bang is the 4 cell Chicom. At $20, you can alter them all you like. Disburse, those "older, heavier canvas" rigs, are we talking vietnam era or 1980's? A bunch of the brown ones came in a couple years ago from one seller. I should have grabbed every last one as the were priced below the average and they turned out to be 1960's and absolutely superior in every way to the standard green 80's rigs. That seemed to be a one time offering. They must have cleaned out a warehouse.

Go back into this subsection of the forum, and use search engine. Simply type 'chest rig' and lots of good information will show up. Grab you favorite drink, snack, and start reading.

Weaponmark - and OP - Major Surplus & Survival have the Heavy Canvas three cell chest rigs for sale for $12.95 currently. It appears that they are the Vietnam Era type chest rigs - although I think they also carry the lighter material chest rigs also and a four cell carry sling pouch for $9.95 of the lighter material.
I ordered a couple of the three cell type a few months back- and will order a few more. Something more modern is of course better - but for a basic no frills chest rig that can be modified with little effort, these are the ones to consider. |

Chinese chest rig, Amazon or many others. Good piece of gear, even if you have other more expensive ones.
I have a number of them from when they were cheap, and store mags in them, in ammo cans, 2 per. They also hold a mag loader, cleaning kit and oil bottle, etc.

I have a couple of the green Chinese rigs that came with a bunch of flatback mags I pcked up at a gunshow. My go to is a Strike Hard Gear "H" harness rig. It's very well made. I haven't done any classes with it, but it seems good to go just screwing around with it at the farm.

I bought one of these chicom 3 cell rigs a couple months ago. Like all surplus rigs I've tried, I find the straps lacking and will be cutting them off and added better ones. I also like the type 81 chest rig a lot. I need to get another. Mine has an odd smell that I've never been able to get out. Probably decomp but who knows. |

Try removing it with some water/vinegar mixture and gently spraying it down and let it dry or dab/scrub it a bit, or just let it air dry outside hanging in a windy area and it'll be gone in a few days to a week from the UV from the sun, depending on how bad it is. I usually do it. Try the odorless disinfectant Lysol or febreeze spray, that may be a decent option |
