Default NDM86 .308 Magazine for over $500!

Wow, the magazines for the NDM-86 in .308 have gotten stupidly expensive. I'm glad I picked up some over the years before they got this rare. It also makes me think my magazines are now worth more then my rifle. I've got 13 magazines.

Yeah I guess I picked a bad time to be searching for some, though I guess it's a good time to try and figure out some good alternatives.

Newbies with excess cash. Every bidder had less than 25 feedback. When these 3 lawyers have enough mags the price will return to normal.

Maybe. And then again, maybe not? I mean, it used to be that you could pick up the whole gun "cheap" and then the prices went up, up, up. Hell, when I bought my KBI Dragunov SVD in 1994, I only paid $2700 for it. Think the price on those will come back down "when the 3 lawyers finish buying" them, too? Not likely.

The fact is that there are only "X" number of these mags out there, and they just don't come up for sale all that often. So if that is the price the market is willing to bear, AND if more sell for it, then that IS the new going price. If it does not, and there is no consistency in sales at that price, then it was either a fluke OR just a case of a spike in the demand curve. But it's like everything else; if there IS someone out there who pays $500 for another .308 NDM-86 mag every time one comes up for sale, and someone has to either meet or beat his price to get them, then that becomes the "new normal" price for them. I never thought I'd ever see that KBI SVD go for well over $10,000 consistently either, but there you are. Any time you have more buyers than product, the price in an open market reflects that. Anyone who wants to disagree is of course welcome to sell all they have for whatever's "fair" instead, but the ones who buy may just turn around and flip it for the profit left on the table if you do. I was kind of shocked by watching it go up THAT high too, but there it is.

Crazy.

Wouldn't mind a couple more mags for the .308, but not at that price. Heck that's about 1/3 the price I paid for the rifle.

I thought I overpaid when I got them from CDNN before they ran out. I can't remember exactly what I paid for them back then, but for 5 bills I could've gotten a lot more than what I did.

Went to the internet archive and found this: https://web.archive.org/web/20060618.../dragunov.html

They were $69.95 for quite a while at CDNN and sold very slowly. I've seen a few auctions in the last couple years that have crested $500. These are very well made magazines but it seems for these prices one could have duplicates made for less money.

The galil mags seem to be the easiest to convert, I snagged 3 of them a while back before gunsnet imploded. I'd like to see Csspecs come out with one, however since there's a limited demand for a replacement I wouldn't hold my breath on it.

Also, if I remember correctly, a member here named Tomac grabbed the last mags CDNN had for sale.

Yeah a guy named Surly in SD used to do them, not sure if he still does anymore. The ones I got from him were converted. Looks like a new/modified rear lug is put on.

Those were EM-352's, and if I remember correctly they used 54R bodies but the followers were modified. I think the magwells were a bit different on the receivers too.

My Surly mag does not run well. Maybe some tweaking would get it there, but I have not tried.

All the ones I got always ran fine, with the exception of the last time I went out. I was having some FTF issues with one, though it was probably just dirty inside or something. They work, but the regular mags are definitely much more robust.

OK, I'll bite..

Anyone have one of these magazines and a dial caliper?

If you draw out the top outside of the magazine with dimensions I could figure if its possible to make them from anything I currently have dies for.

Does the magazine activate a LRBHO or other device?

AZAKMs offered to loan a magazine.. I'm going to take him up on the offer.

It won't take me long to figure out if I can do it.

(I'm not working Christmas by the way.. I was actually looking up what I could do with my new M77 when I saw this topic)

A few photos of the mag well including the back area would be helpful.
