I like my PO 4x24P2 (AK 74 reticle, AK mount) quite a bit as I have rather poor eye sight so the slight zoom sure helps. Not to mention that particular scope has quite a FOV which is very nice. I've shot a couple guns with red dots and wasnt too wowd by them.

*The PO 4x24P2 [74 Reticle]. I like it because to me it is alot like my Trijicon TA31FM4. I just wished it sat a bit lower other than that it is great.

At what distance do you plan on engaging targets? The AK74 was not designed to be a precision weapon system. When the front lines are being stormed you will be well equipped with a 74 and red dot 300meters and closing in fast

Red dot... it's fast and lightweight
I have a primary arms 1-6x scope on an RPK. I figured that it would work okay since the rifle is already so heavy, adding a heavy side mount, rings, and a scope wouldn't be that big of a deal. Now it's really heavy and really bulky.

After shooting both for many years I say go with low power variable scope. (1x4/1x6)
One will simply have more options with that kind of setup.

Not enough range or accuracy to make a scope useful. Iron sights are best, but if you must, a red dot.

A low power scope will allow you to see your target better. If it is easier to see then it is easier to hit. The price you pay is bulk and weight. Not a big deal for most people as we aren’t loaded down with gear.

Up to 50 yards red dot is Ok, anything longer I prefer 1-6x Primary Arms or Vortex scope. Robski likes prizm scopes from Primary as well. I see no point of getting these huge Russian made dots or scopes.

Redundancy.

With the price for the SGL-31 and SLR-104 and milspec mags you can afford quality glass and mounts.

The older I get the more I like RDS and magnified optics.

Irons work great but an RDS makes point/shoot work so much faster.

Ranged shooting 200+ yards magnified optic.

Just my .02 fwiw.
