Default Optics for PTR-91

Looking for some optics and mount recommendations for a railed GIR model.

Well what are your uses for the PTR? Close range stuff? Or shooting past 300m?

For the 0-300m engagements, an Eotech EXPS3 + magnifier is a good bet. Any other eotech might not hold up to the sheer kinetic energy of the G3 design. The Aimpoint PRO/Comp/Micro series are all GTG as well.

Past 300m and I.would suggest going prism. I currently have a Scar 17S with a Trijicon TA11. Works great out to 4-500ish. I also have a Sig 716 with a PA5X scope. The glass is almost as clear as the ACOG, but you lose the fiber optic and tritium in favor of the ACSS reticle.

I paid $1000 for both optics lightly used. If you want more expensive stuff, look at Elcan or Nightforce.

Regardless of what optic you choose, you'll probably want to invest in a cheek riser of sorts. But until we figure out what you want to do with the firearm, we might not be able to give you the best suggestions for your uses.

Currently limited to 300yds.

Have the eotech already on another setup. The PA 5x sounds interesting but haven't used a prism. Is it caliber specific?

I have some Cabelas GCs need to use up. Anything there I should consider? I see some vortex on sale.

This platform is hard on optics. If you have the coin I would go ACOG. In fact I did go ACOG and I love it. I tend to mobe that optic around some tho. I just saw a couple of ACOGs the 1.5x models for $650 check slickguns.com. Good luck

Is there a spring set or buffer to soften the recoil?
I thought it wasn't that bad from the review comments I had seen??
I don't know much about these.

Maybe a Vortex with the VIP warranty isn't a bad idea if it's that hard hitting. But I do like the ACSS reticle.

I put a Vortex Diamondback 3X9X40 on my GI-R.

Works good for what I use it for. Mostly ringing steel at 100-400 yards.

I think the RMR ACOG would be nice. Or Aimpoints

I think long scopes suck unless on a 300 mag or above. Maybe a bolt action.

Long scopes usually suck at Target tracking and shooting and moving. You want a versatile optic like an Eotech that can work from 0-500.

I think Aimpoints were one of the first options on g-3’s.

I wish I had the no. Scope rail PTR Classic so I could run a quality Hensoldt Scope. Those things are crystal clear.

They aren't bad at all, less kick than a bolt-action .308 by quite a bit. There are enhanced buffers available, from HKparts.net, RobertRTG and also Bill Springfield makes a special modifed buffer using the factory buffer that came with your rifle, all good choices.

Only real issue with optics, is the length, if your scope is very long (over 11-12 inches) it may interfere with your charging handle, but you can use a taller mount and get away with it.

I use a Burris 3x9 in Warne QD rings (.65 ring height) which is very low, had to mod my rear sight a tiny bit to accommodate it, but it works great and is only about 10 inches long so it clears the CH, and works out past 300 yards easily.

Lots of info about PTR/G3/Cetme/C308 optics in the G3 sticky thread at the top of general rifle discussion section, read through a couple pages, somewhere in that thread I have a post with lots of pics of what I did, and others have posted plenty as well.

I use a Zeiss Terra scope on one of my G3 clones. The price is good and the scope is amazing. I would highly recommend it.

Optics planet has the PA 5x ACSS for 252 after code RIFLE13 with a free 40 GC
Seems like a no brainer.

I use an MFI low profile mount on my HK SR9TC. Tried the HK claw mount but changed to the MFI.

Same. Mine's sitting in an American Defense QD mount.
It's been a pretty good setup.

The gun is already in the category of not-svelte. Some would call it a Pig. So think size and weight. What sort of quality scope is going to degrade the gun's handling the least?

I like the ACOG. It's what's on my GIR model. It has some age on it but tritium lighting is still strong. Mine does not have the fiber optic tube on it. Has crosshair reticle calibrated for 7.62 NATO ball. Might be a TA-01B. 4 power.

Buy once, cry once, as the smart man said.

Sounds like lots of folks have had good luck w your more typical tactical variable power scopes, which is great.

My other suggestion would be something like a Burris 3X or other fixed power scope as they tend to be more durable.

The problem that some people have experienced has more to do with the recoil impulse as opposed to the total amount of recoil. There is just a lot of mass slamming back there.

The other point is that because these rifles are fairly accurate and can go long, some shooters do shoot long and end up noticing small changes in their scope as opposed to other platforms where you might not try and use and be so sensitive to changes in a real precision scope.
