Default Would Buy A Newly Imported 5.45 ak If It Happened?

i know that the market is smaller, was just curious how small
my question is: if a good 5.45 rifle between $600-1000ish were to be imported again, would you buy one?
yes, or another if you already have one, trying to gauge how many people on this forum really are interested

Right now I feel comfortable supporting the one I already have.

Yes but only because I got into 5.45 12+ years ago when mags were cheap.

If the question is would i want another? Then probably not. I already have an SAR-2 for a Romanian PA86/AIMS74, SGL31-94 for a Russian AK74M, SLR105 for a Bulgarian AK74 and SLR104FR for a AKS74.
That's pretty much all of the variants used by militaries. The 5.45x39 M74 round was never used at near the level of the 7.62x39.

Today outside of Russia and Romania, no one seems to still build AK74 type rifles either.
And Romania is trying to switch over to 5.56 NATO but its an economy thing for them.

Bulgaria doesn't seem too interested in making any more 5.45x39s and I am pretty amazed Arsenal Inc. was able to get Arsenal AD to make the SLR104FR and SLR104UR in the first place...and that was back before the 7n6 ban.

Sure a North Korean Type 88 might be neat, but fat chance of anything ever like that happening.
A Romanian PM-93 RPK in 5.45x39 is slightly more likely and I would probably buy such a thing if it ever came in.

But otherwise, yeah I am good and happy just to enjoy what we have already.

I would like a quality Romanian rifle. Could they bring it in as a pistol. The importer will have to compete with stripped lowers and generic AR kits. A quality foreign AK is a lot more money than a generic AR.

I don't want to buy a Romanian sporter and pay to modify it.

Donor rifle, parts kit, and paying for a quality gunsmith to put it together = financially upside down with the project.

Hop on Gunbroker and find yourself an SAR-2 or WASR-2. They are still available pretty regularly, and for not at all crazy money.

Then your collection is far from complete.

There are 25-30 models in the '74 family.

Wouldn't mind another Saiga, would buy a Roumanian just to give it a try, might even be interested in a Tantal if the price were right.

Maybe. I don't have a fixed stock 5.45. I wouldn't mind having one in the safe. Just wish I had more ammo and mags. Pretty pricey unless you get commercial mags and find a deal on ammo.

Call me what you will... if the Bulgarians would make a Milled receiver version with modern optics mounts I'd buy that no matter what it took. the 5.45 in a milled gun would be too cool and damn reliable. something like the AR-M75F in 5.45... THAT would be something worth buying.

Yes. I love my C.U.R. 2 AIMS-74 clone and my Arsenal SLR-104, but I'd also dig a Saiga or VEPR or something similar in 5.45. I was a late bloomer to the caliber, but it's quickly become a near-obsession. They are super fun to shoot, and variety is a tasty spice.

25-30 members in the 5.45x39 club you say? Hmmm lets see....how many can i list off the top of my head?

Russia - AK74, AKS74, AKS74U, AK74M, AK105, AK107, and AK12.
Also lets count the RPK74, RPKS74, and RPK74M even though technically, they are more like cousins.
Not going to count the 'N' versions as separate since its really just a bolt on addition that makes the difference.
Also don't think i'll count the RPK16 as i don't know if it has really entered into mass production yet?

Bulgaria: AK74, AKS74, and AKS74U.
I'll give them their RPK in 5.45x39 even though most were made by Molot in reality. Still they did a milled version, so we'll count it.

East Germany: MPIS-M74 & MPIS-M74K are the two that come to mind.

Poland: Wz.88 Tantal & Wz.89 Onyx.
I'll give them the '89 even though very few were actually made.

Romania: PA-86/AIMS74 & the PM80/PM90 shorties in the caliber.
Also their RPK variant, the PM-93.

Ukraine: VEPR Bullpup.
I think otherwise they just used Soviet mfg AK74s.

China: Type 88.
Just made for export, be it to civilians or militaries.

North Korea: Type 88.
Standard issue for them folks.

I think that is a total of 24?

Of those, Russia is just about the only one still with 5.45x39 chambered rifles in standard production.
Romania could still make them, but actually doesn't seem to have done so in a long time.
Bulgaria seems to have completely ditched the cartridge. I'd not be surprised if the SLR104FR ended up being Arsenal's final run.
East Germany dropped the 5.45 roundvery quickly after reunification, and AKs haven't been made there in a long time.
Poland only made the Tantal for 4-5 years, and after the original run of 25k or so, immediately declared the 5.45 round obsolete.

Russia, China, and North Korea we'll never see AKs out of again.
East Germany no longer exists and firearms out of Ukraine seem very unlikely.

So Poland, Bulgaria, and Romania are left.
Of those, Poland isn't going to do a 5.45x39. I feel reasonably confident in saying this.
As said already, Bulgaria could but really doesn't seem willing, and would definitely not be $700 or less haha.

So that leaves us with Romania.

I believe Romania is really our only even semi-realistic hope for any kind of new 5.45x39 import....but then you have to ask which US company is going to place a large enough order and poney up enough money? It sure as hell isn't going to be Century. That much I can promise you.

Absolutely, yes. My problem is my "buy a new '74" fund never seems to have enough money in it when the getting is good.

I hope you take this as a compliment but damn.. You put that DOWN. From all that would you recommend someone sell their ,say,104 and buy a 106 at this time? You paint a rather bleak view on the 5.45 there.
