Default AK47 Build Safety Lever problems

Hey!

Just "finished" building my first AK and as I was installing the FCG (have been using the group and two pins that came with the parts kit as well as the original safety lever) I found it difficult to install the safety lever (with hammer forward and trigger depressed/pulled to the rear the safety lever 'ledge' will not clear the sear) if I install the lever prior to the FCG and then install the group and its two pins this works -

However when the safety lever is placed in the 'middle' position, between fire and safe, it does not appear to catch the hammer after cycling after the trigger is depressed. It looks like this would cause a slam fire if inadvertently placed in that position, what are my options to stop this from happening? If I purchase a "semi-auto" safety lever will that solve the problem?

Sorry for the lack of experience its my first build and I was hoping to have it finished by now but I cant seem to find any information on this anywhere/find anywhere that this is mentioned. Thanks for your time!

Cut a notch in the safety to clear the disconnector.

Would that fix the issue with the safety though or would it still be affected? Also is the tapco worth it? This milspec trigger doesnt seem bad at all

Ah fair enough, this would also be solved by just getting a semi-auto safety though right?

That is the "semi-auto safety".

You can do it yourself, or pay someone to do it for you.

Can someone please explain why the original FCG and full-auto safety selector will not work correctly on the OP semi-auto receiver?

because the full auto safety can be set to hold down on the disconnector and get a very dangerous version of "hammer follow full auto". you have to notch the safety and remove the tail.

So would it be acceptable to use the full-auto safety with a US trigger group (RAK-1/G-2/etc.)?

yes, do it all the time. just mark where it hits and remove enough to clear. there should be enough stub to lock the trigger in place when on safe.

Also if you DON'T cut the safety lever as shown above and install the Tapco G2 or equivalent, The rifle becomes unsafe (or potentially so) if the safety lever is rotated higher than the SAFE position. In most cases the top cover will block the lever from being raised too high. But to the point, the lever will release the hammer if NOT cut and lifted too high.

Do not alter the safety lever it is not necessary!!!!!. Take a dremil or grinder and reshape the top rear of the sear until the safety lever clears with trigger held back. This will not hurt operation and you do not have to alter the original parts.

This can be construed as "intent to create a machine gun" in a court of law ( a jury of your peers, right? They won't be gunnies, but the dumbest & most gullible non-gun people the prosecution can find )

Removing the unnecessary portion of the safety lever has no illegal connotations whatsoever.

Grinding on the FCG may also alter heat treatment.

Remove the tail on the disconnector or buy a G2 trigger group. Grind the safety like the picture above or close to it so it clears the disconnector when you install it.

Just beware the uncut safety will contact the back of the disconnector hook if lifted and push the trigger hooks forward enough to let the hammer go. If you don't cut the safety lever and experience an operational problem, and start fiddling with it....make sure your chamber is empty first.
