Default Got my first Russian today

Picked up a refurb 1954 Tula today. Is pretty minty, the previous owner had it since newly imported and fired 20 rounds through it and in the safe it went. I got it home, gave it a good going over, and then proceeded to run 150 rounds through it I was torn between trying to find an as issued to fawn over, or a refurb to shoot the snot out of, for now I am happy with my choice.

Yeah, she's a beauty.

Please don't put a 30rd mag on that beauty or "upgrade/customize in any way

Got a sling? If not, the OD Russian AK sling is correct.

That I don't, thanks for the info, should make it a bit easier to find if I decide to get one!

As far as I know, none of the Russian SKS's originally had a "blued" bolt. The black bolts are due to the rifle being painted during an arsenal refurb. Also, the Russian SKS rifles (everything but the bolt) were originally a blued metal finish but a good many were painted black before being put away in storage by the Russians. There were however, some blued bayonets (instead of the more common silver/gray) used by the Russians.

As far as which is preferred, it depends on what you're looking for. I have a 1950 Russian that still retains it's original bluing (no paint) and the bolt is in the white (not painted during refurb). In the end, it's still a refurb, just what's referred to as a light one instead of a heavy refurb (normally there's a box with a line running diagonally through it on the top cover that designates it was refurbed).

As far as price, the light refurbs can bring a little more money (maybe 50 to 100 bucks or whatever someone is willing to pay depending on all sorts of variables like if the stock and parts are all matching, etc.) but there's nothing wrong with a nice heavy refurb and I wouldn't hesitate to grab one. As issued rifles typically bring an even higher premium.

Now if you can find a first year (1949) Russian SKS in original configuration with the spiker bayonet, then you're talking some serious coin (more common in Canada but not so common here in the US from what I've seen).

By the way, nice rifle FrankieB!

Default Russian SKS

Nice piece. I was at a gun auction this morning for a 1953 Tula they had advertised. Looked like the stock and trigger guard had been force matched. No sling. Other SKS rifles were going for stupid high prices. Waited and waited for them to put the Tula on the block but they kept going to other rifles and hadguns and eventually had to leave. If I had to guess I'd say it brought over $600 after taxes and buyers premium were added on.

Checked Armslist a bit ago and found a 1954 Tula for $450!!! Stock has been force matched but all other numbers are correct, and it has the sling. Am getting more info from the seller. Wish me luck!!

Didn't even bid on it. Auctioneers kept picking other firearms and I simply ran out of time. Based on what some other SKS rifles went for that day I'd say north of $550.

Good news is that the 1953 Tula I found on Armslist is now mine (I mistakenly said it was a 1954)!! Seller relisted it with a price drop to $400. I met him earlier this week and nabbed it. It is a refurb but does seem to be well done. Taking it to the range tomorrow.

Hey that's great, I have a '53 Tula also. Most Russians are refurbs but that is a good price in my opinion. Two years ago I paid $425 for mine but Russians are almost nonexistent around my AO and high when one is found!

Glad you got it Renegade, post up some photos & let us know how it does on the range please!
