Default m92 optic location

Bout ready to put a optic/red dot on my M92.

Aesthetically I like the 'look' of the optic being mounted on top of the dust cover (via a picatinny rail mounted to cover) instead of the gas tube, but, then, somewhere I read it was stated that having the optic over the gas rail and further forward allows a better 'field of view' of the area in front of you.

True? Not true? Personal preference??

Thanks

Having the red dot mounted forward does give you better peripheral view/awareness, but it also slightly increases the "tube effect" of the micro red dots. that being said IMO an Ultimak is a more solid mount then putting anything on the dust cover. if you want to mount an optic towards the rear, have a side rail installed or use an AK master mount.
ETA: I personally used a Ultimak on my M85pv SBR, I wanted to be able to fold the stock and still use the optic.

Thanks. I have a shockwave brace on a folding mechanism so a side mount is not viable.

I understand that realistically Im not looking for anything past 100yd 'accuracy', but want the most sturdy mount possible. Will go check out ultimak.

Ultimak transmits direct exhaust gas heat; effect depends on amount of fire...
Put a ($50-shipped) Khyber Customs V2 peep sight into her. All you'll need for quick/accurate 100 yards and you can always add a (co-)witnessing RD into either position later. I've "cheesegrater"-drilled the wood OEM and even Ronin top handguard for a functional cool look.

Get one of those welded rail jobs on the dust cover. I think optics on ak gas tubes are some of the crappiest places to have an optic. Especially on full sized AK's. The side mount is good too. Usually optics on 4-6 MOA AK's are barely faster than irons.

Have you ever used a red dot on an ultimak? it's still a lot better then irons. I've gotten the Ultimak pretty damn hot on my SBR and haven't killed the PA red dot yet. I'm gonna have to disagree with you on your last statement, using irons, and having to line up several focal planes in order to make a hit on target will never be anywhere close to a red dot in speed(even 6 moa dots). with the red dot, you look through the optic at the target and super impose the dot on the target.

I've used both the dust cover mount and the ultimak railed gas tube for a red dot on my M92. Ultimak is best. With the arm brace, the ultimak puts the red dot in a very natural position for me.

Im 90% sure Im heading in this direction, to hell with aesthetics. Lol.

Ive been 'drawing' my M92 from a low ready to shooting, and I'm beginning to come to the possible realization that an optic on the dust cover may not be acquired by my eye as fast as having it over the gas tube.

Thanks for all the replies and knowledge.

I just finished mine today, well minus the light im planning to add on. The ultimak fits nice and snug to the barrel w/ the clamps(I put some blue loctite on it too as I plan to just use a 20ga bore brush to clean it. My T2 cowitnesses well and the dot is quite easy to find coming up from the waist. Can't wait to shoot it.

you can always go with AK master mount, to add a side rail and then go with RS regulate

My shockwave is on a folding mechanism, so side mount is out.

It was my original consideration, but general consensus seems to indicate an ultimak/gastube set up may be more secure.

I have plans to replace all the wood furniture so I may end up with a MI handguard set.

Decisions decisions.... all I know is based on the current state of affairs I need to get this truck gun dialed in ASAP.

Yes. It's from Midwest Industries...

The Primary Arms Micro Dot with Removable Base (Aimpoint clone) fits on top perfectly...

If you have any further questions, PM me, because I might miss them...
