Default Blue Sky M1 Garand

An M1 Garand has been on my want list for a long time. I don't care about finding some super rare one or a great shooter. My only criteria have always been 1) war time and 2) a cool stock that looks like it has been there.

Of course anytime I find a deal on one I have no money (which is the case today).

The m1 I found is an April 1945 Springfield Blue Sky import. The import stamp is very light and hard to read so I doubt the barrel is ruined. Typical grey parkerizing and a dark wood stock that gives off the "been there" feeling. I know nothing more about M1s so I can't comment on barrel date, etc. price is $835 would be about $880 OTD. This is at a shop I rarely go to, so I doubt they will let me take it apart. A flashlight down the barrel and bullet check at the muzzle will probably be it

I'm debating going back tomorrow and offering $775. I'll find a way to pay for it as I always do

Any reason I should shy away?

I want a m1 grand as well but I don't know anything about them to make a sane purchase. I found one yesterday for 850 but I don't really know what I'm looking at and it's pretty beat up to boot. Buy it dude fuck it, these fucking things only go up in price any damn way.

One of my Garands is a Blue Sky import, receiver March 1945, barrel 1954, but you wouldn’t know it, it was rebarreled and rebuilt right after I bought it in 1989-90.

You could get a service grade M1 Garand from the CMP for about $750 and have a better Rifle then a Blue Sky import. Or you could get a rack or a field grade for much less if all you want is a M1 to bang around with. I just got a service grade from the CMP last month. Receiver is April 1941, rebarreled in 1943. The CMP Garand will also hold value and increase in value almost as soon as you buy it. Many of the Blue Sky Garands were pretty worn out, they reparkerized many of them so at first glance they looked ok.

CMP Service Grade on top, old Blue Sky on the bottom, that is not the stock that came on it.

Go to the CMP and pick up a Service Grade for $750.00 shipped, to your door.

Checked over, adjusted as necessary and guaranteed to run or it will be fixed or your money back

It'll be worth more in the future as well, as it will have "papers"

Field Grades are only $650 and are a great value as a shooter.

http://thecmp.org/cmp_sales/rifle_sales/m1-garand/

If you are close to Anniston Alabama or Camp Perry Ohio, they have stores there where you can stop in and pick one up.

Glashuas, I see you were quicker on the trigger.

http://thecmp.org/cmp_sales/rifle_sales/m1-garand/

Currently several choices in stock at the CMP.

A couple of years ago I got one of the Special Grade Garands in 308.
Basically a brand new rifle.

Shipped straight to your door, adult signature required. NO FFL. NO FFL FEE.

I started typing this 10 minutes before I posted it, then took a break to go help unload groceries for my wife.

During that short span, 2 other posters suggested the same thing, lol.

I used to buy them at Woolworths for $150.

The M1 Carbines were $125.

The requirements are pretty lax, you may already belong to an acceptable organization.

http://thecmp.org/cmp_sales/rifle_sa...-requirements/

If not, the Garand Collector's Association is the go-to .ORG.

The Garand Collectors Association, the ones that did the video in this thread:

http://akfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=344512

are a good nationwide group and many have joined it for the purpose of getting their rifle from the CMP.

You can join them here:

http://thegca.org/product/gca-membership-2/

You may have a local club that is affiliated as well, if you would rather to support them. Make sure their affiliation is active though.

If you select Wisconsin here and search it will perhaps give you local clubs, and they may help you with the "Marksmanship" requirements as well:

https://ct.thecmp.org/app/v1/index.php?do=clubSearch

I have bought a half dozen rifles from the CMP and never been disappointed or had a problem.

I have been looking to get a Garand from the CMP as well, but there are no clubs within 2-3 hours of me. If I join thegca.org, is that all I have to do? Join, and then submit for a garand with the CMP?

I have a "Blue Sky Garand" I bought in the 1980s. Hell of a shooter. No issues with it.

Is it worth the extra $100 for service grade?

That is a difficult question to answer, kind of related to the statement "beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

Since CMP Garands are "luck of the draw" so to speak, after grading, you may get a Field grade that looks as good or better than a Service grade (new wood maybe) and may be close in wear specs (throat erosion, muzzle wear etc.), but your chances of getting a better rifle overall increases with the Service grade.

The Field grade will be reliable and shoot well and you may well get one close to a Service grade, but then you may not either. In any grading system their is a range of conditions. I will say this, in past experience, CMP seems to err on the high side when grading.

Also read the descriptions well, to help you decide. For instance note that in the Field grade if new wood is added it may not have the cleaning kit holes drilled under the buttplate.

All that said if it was me and I had the extra hundred, I would go Service over Field, and hope for the CMP to work its magic. Others may have more experience and differing opinions than I.

Well my order is in the mail. I watched a bunch of YouTube reviews and went with the field grade. If it's not what I want I'll order a service grade and sell it as my friend wants one as well

Good deal! It took almost 5 weeks from when I mailed in mine to when it hit the e-Store. I think that it hit the e-Store on a Monday and I had the rifle in my hand on Friday. They ship Fed Ex overnight and require a signature.

By the time your order processes, the Philippine M1s may be starting to ship.

I was really lucky back when it was still DCM. Back then there was no "grading", the had a crate and the next one they pulled out was the one you got. It was also one per lifetime though. I got a minty one with match sites already installed for $250.

Bought a SA Blue Sky back when and the bore was a sewer pipe. Put a brand new SA 52 or 53 barrel on it and it is spot on.

Yeah, unfortunately the Clintons screwed that up too.

Some Blue Sky M1's looked like the SK's parked them with the wood still on the rifle.... The Blue Sky barrel marking sometimes left an indent inside the barrel.

Blue Skys are the worst of the 90s Korean reimports .Check the headspace 2
I bought when imported had excessive headspace.
Know first hand of others that had timing issues. Personally unless you can shoot it and or someone's fixed it ,I would not buy one beyond parts value.

Brasky the field grades may or may not come with a GI stock. If they come with a replacement stock, most likely it will be a hackberry stock., These were made for parade rifles. The service grade in the picture in my post # 3 above has a CMP walnut replacement stock which is very nice. I have a couple of extra GI M1 Garand stocks if you get a hackberry and are not happy with it .

Yep, you wont lose any money on a CMP M1, that is for sure! There are guys that do that for a hobby, also buying them and tearing them down to sell parts.

Please check the headspacing. My FFL who has built many Garands and has about 20-30 at any given time, and has worked at the CMP ordered 2 a couple months ago. He checked the headspacing and it closed on the Field Gauge. They of coursed fixed it but I think with the 1911's and all of the Garands from RIMPAC, QC may be a issue. I am not bashing CMP in any way, just check the headspacing.

Of course you should do that with all rifles but maybe there is a sense of safety being a CMP.
