Chinese or Arsenal 5.56 converted to 5.45., nope. WASR or SAR 3., never hear of that. Beryl converted from 5.56 to 5.45 nope. On this site many threads on 5,45 Bulgarians converted to 5.56 ., = yes. The only conversions and maybe a few dozen were the 5.56 RPK's converted to RPK 74's. AFAIK. 5.45 SKS., hmm., a rare bird indeed. No need to "convert" an AR., just get an extra upper and add a plug n play barrel, bolt and mag in several calibers. AKBuilder makes Tantal and AK74 pattern barrels to convert 5.45 to 5.56. Not the other way round. gimmeabreak. ![]() |

Yeap cheap surplus corrosive ammo was the one advantage the 5.45 had in this country . Just like the 7.62x25 was popular for some due to cost. At least brass is available for the x25. I wish I had a bunch. |

Megyn Kelly's next episode should be "Horrors of the Poison bullet" and she could interview someone about why 5.45 is bad and linked to Russian aggression against US interests, from Bin Laden to the Moderate Syrians
it would fit the theme of her horrible interviews with Putin and Alex Jones |

If 5.45 is as tenacious as this thread is, we should have no worries over its demise.

Aside from ever so slightly less recoil and scarcity of 5.56 ak parts, 5.45 isnt better than 5.56 plain and simple.
5.45 ballistic gel tests online arent that impressive, including the VMAX cartridge. I'm miles more impressed with 8M3 7.62x39 or even Federal Fusion 7.62x39. Those are truely devastating rounds and the proof is in the ballistic gel videos on youtube. 5.56 also outshines the 5.45 in gel tests and is more readily available in literally any load configuration that youre looking for. Also, im still waiting to see the "devastating limb destroying" effects of this magical round. No one has been able to provide me with a real wound cavity profile, aside from the picture of the young soldier who was grazed by a supposed 5.45 bullet. Also, think about it logically....pull a bullet out of a 5.45 cartridge and measure the length..that is the maximum length it can create a wound cavity with. Theres no magical force behind the bullet. It goes in, and hopefully tumbles. Even then, the bullet will make a wound profile reminiscent of a cut from a knife since no fragentation is involved. 5.56, when it works, is much better because of its fragmentation. Some say "if it works", but that problem mostly arises with FMJ and last time i checked, im not required to follow international convention orders when defending my home, and am able to use hollow points/special loads. I like the concept of the 5.45 exiting in a competely different flight path than how it entered. Shoot something head-on and it could leave the designated target at 3 o'clock. This characteristic has been documented many a times through animal wounds from hunting and also gel tests. The only thing unverifiable of the round is the ballistics of the 7N22 round, something unaquirable in the US to begin with. |

5.45 is better than 5.56 because I have an RPK-74, a fixed stock AK-74 and an AKS-74U clone, 150+ magazines and 25,000+ rounds of 5.45.
I have nothing in 5.56. That's what makes it better. -Bob |

I have been always concerned about the availability of foreign ammo .
5.56x45 is an ammo that will always be plentiful in this country , so when I had the choice of getting a Saiga on 5.45 or on .223/5.56 I chose the .223/5.56 . I don`t have any worries about ammo . |

because it's what I stock/shoot. It wasn't some big planned hunt. Basically pest control, the javelinas were acting aggressively towards my grandmothers dogs so we grabbed some rifles and shot them.

All Bullets tumble. I like 5.45 but I think 5.56 and 5.45 suck past 500 yards once a small gust of wind kicks in, it can blow either round feet off target. I like the 5.45 a bit better since it is lower pressure and does better out of shorter barrels.
308 for the win.

Actualy since this thread started the importation of rifles is near zero and things in Russia have been sanctioned.
The 5.45 is in worse standing more than ever as far as becoming more popular. While in the mean time 223 rifles are at the lowest prices in 15 years or more other than AK'S that are trendy right now. I think 5.45 ammo might be a wise financial investment maybe |
