Default 6 coats of Amber Shellac

Turned out darker than I expected. This is for my SLR-95. Is it too dark or about right? I really wanted that Russian Red, but most folks who know say that's a fake color anyway.

Pics soon. I'm waiting on the Handguard Retainer and lower buttstock tang to get here. Thanks for feedback. I was disappointed that it looks so uniform and like walnut, but it's growing on me I believe. This is my first experience with Shellac.

So is that the wood with just six coats of shellac on it? I need to get into refinishing some of my furniture but never used shellac.

That looks very nice!

Yes. It's the Bullseye Amber that you can get at Lowes. I thought it would be lighter. It's easy to use once you figure out that it dries very fast. It's growing on me and the more I look at authentic pictures the more it matches many of them. Thanks!

See how you like on the ak. There is real red Soviet wood. Problem is it's all different colors, from almost black to blonde. And finding original mint red sets that all match isn't easy.
I've got some 74 hg's that I need to match a stock to. I'm going to try to add a couple coats of amber shellac to it and see it that helps, before I refinish the stock. But it's for a clone ak74 so I figure wth.
I got a good bit of practice using the Soviet red stain formula, and others, on different woods. Pm me if I can help.

Once I got it outside in some natural sunlight, it looks Amber instead of Walnut brown... I like it.

Next question. If the cleaning rid worth $215? I bought the parts, my FFL says he'll do it for $100 which is very reasonable I think?

The Amber Shellac is really the original finish. I did not want to buy it. I had 3-4 shade of Minwax in the buggy. I just kept hearing the old crusty AL purists screaming SHELLAC -C-C... lol

Thanks! Can't believe I waited until now to try Shellac. It's ancient compared to the new "Polys" but man is it ever easy and super fast! Looks great too...

I totally agree about the looks of the Hogue. But it's like going back to an old pair of uncomfortable shoes once you've had the best. That Hogue just feels too good, so I'll suffer the poor looks... lol

Those last photos look damn good op. I read some mix a drop of red into the shellac, maybe try a sample piece to see if you like it. The garnet shellac mentioned above sounds like something to try also.

Looks great. I've got a can of the same shellac and a small can of sedona red. Wanting to do the furniture on my pap 92. It'll be my first time so figured If I didn't like it would be cheap to replace the wood.

I love that Russian Red look. I decided to change it up because some of the old farts round here despise it and think it looks fake. I really not that concerned that it'll lack the authenticity on my last new gun. However, this rifle was built 20 years ago and I wanted it to be a little closer to classic.

I used Sedona Red penetrating stain and it was FUBAR. I used it on a brand new WASR that had a white wood and it just wouldn't take the stain. It was splotchy. I would up using a gel based stain that was really easy.

Trick to working with shellac is to thin it so you apply thinner coats

I used the same Shellac for the wood that I put on my Draco pistol. It started to boil and bubble off after three mags firing slowly. Around 3 months of cure time, probably 7 or 8 coats. What gives? Yours looks great by the way! I hope that it doesn't bubble like mine!

Looks good. You can also use clear Shellac after a couple of coats of Amber of you want a lighter finish.

As far as "Russian Red" in the USA too often looks like a candy apple paint job. And has no resemblance to the Russian style of reddish color etc.

Negative Ghost Rider.

Soviet laminate ranged in color from dark blood red to honey with a hint of green. IIRC, Tula had some of the darkest coloring where the Izzy's were more orange/honey.

I refinished the wood on the RPK in the last pic. It was the standard Romanian laminate (unfinished, maybe oiled). I cleaned and sanded the wood. I then put 5 coats of garnet shellac on it. That's it. Not too red, not too orange and not too dark. Just perfect.

Factory finishes on AKM stocks:

Now I know where I've seen these pics before! Damn!
Don't worry.....I won't tell anyone.
By golly if my SLR-95 was to have wood..........it would look like this!
How much wood can a woodchuck chuck? Or would he? LOL!
For real though.....awesome man!
