Default Suppressor, go for it or wait?

I'd like to get a little GM-22 suppressor for my Remington 597 AAC-SD.

Should I go ahead and pay the tax or is there a remote chance they will be removed from NFA in the near future?

My luck would be to pay the tax, wait a year and the day after I take possession they would be removed from NFA.

If you wait, you may never have it.

I wouldn't wait. The Hearing Protection Act may or may not pass. Wait times are shorting and should definitely be less than a year once the ATF catches up on the backlog (which they are doing). I own 5 suppressors and I'm waiting on 2 more.

My favorite suppresors are my 22lr ones. Super quiet and a lot of fun at the range. Also pistol caliber cans are amazing on subguns. I have a SilencerCo Omega 9K for my MP5, which is perfect with 147 grn 9mm.

I would recommend purchasing through Silencer Shop. They make it extremely easy to purchase one with the ATF's new guidelines.

If it's still the same act that's in right now, if it passes and you purchased your suppressor after the act was introduced you will get a refund of your $200 tax. There is no reason to wait if so.

If you wait you may never get one. Just do it.

If you buy now, you wait for the govt. approval.

If you hold off until the law passes, you wait until the manufacturers catch up with demand.

This. I'm cautiously optimistic about the HPA.

I'm stuffing quarters in the cookie jar for a suppressor on an upcoming 5.45 build. I hope to start the proceedings before Christmas. With the current wait times, it'll be a race between actually finding time to finish the build and getting the approval lol.

If the hearing act passes, the price will skyrocket until the market stabilizes.

i would not wait. I personally do not think that it will ever happen. People have been talking about this hearing protection for a year, and nothing ever came out of it.

Get the can now. The legislation will either pass or it won’t.

If it passes, you get the $200 back and you are no different than if you bought after the law change except you have enjoyed your can in the mean time.

If it doesn’t pass, then you are the same as everyone else that will still have to comply with this $200 tax on our rights.

Good luck. I tried to order a GM-22 for a customer. Could not find one in stock - anywhere. Called Gemtech - they were bought out by Smith and Wesson (yuk - so much for Gemini Technologies).

Guy at Gemtech said "We don't have an GM-22's in stock. S&W has blown up our production schedule, we don't know if/when we will have them again - ever".

Unless you can find one is stock at a dealer somewhere, you are not likely to get your hands on one. I can't find a single distributor with one in stock, they are all telling me they cannot get any from Gemtech (see above).

Might have a look at the Mack Brothers VAPOR. Got two in last week, pretty neat - priced about the same as the GM-22.

Cheers,
M.T.V.

That's what I was thinking. Go ahead and pull the trigger.

There was a one in stock at a local dealer. Price is reasonable.
I'll have to pay them a visit next week.

If the hearing act passes and any suppressor is handled like a gun, when most states will then allow you to make your own gun for personal use how is it the price for suppressors will skyrocket when in most state you will then be able to make a suppressor free of charge?

The thought is that if they are removed from NFA registration, many more will buy them, creating a supply shortage. No manufacturer is going to ramp up production hoping for HPA passage, so they will not be able to keep up with demand.

You're absolutely correct that home building will also increase, but I think many more will be buying than building.

Also, currently because everyone is waiting for the HPA to pass before they buy, suppressor sales are down and the manufacturers have dropped production. If it ever does pass there will be a hell of a shortage for a while until they can catch up. OTOH, I have a feeling a lot more of those $99 suppressor designs might get made by startup and established companies so you would have a lot more players in the game. Eventually volume should make even the high end stuff come down a bit.

Home builds from scratch will be off the charts too, except for those who lack a lathe or proper tools. If they are treated like plain old rifles and such for paperwork purposes, one would think the same rules would apply: The serial numbered tube is the gun, the rest are unregulated parts. In which case a DIY kit should be possible once standard size tube s and threads are decided upon. Buy the $30 tube from your FFL, the rest online and put it together yourself.

yes, unfortunately GEM-TECH stuff is hard to get. Their products are top notch, i own 2 of them. waay worth the $$$

i had to drive 5 hours 1 way for a gunshop that seems to be tight with them, because not a single other PA dealer that could get that particular can that i wanted- and their stocking dealer had (1) in stock

Educated guess on my part but it will not pass anytime soon. I've already seen comments by influental leftists about how much worse the Las Vegas shooting would have been had the shooter had suppressors.

The HPA was recently rolled into this year's SHARE act and actually has a chance of passing this year.

This title may be cited as the “Hearing Protection Act”.
and here's a link to the exact text

SHARE is dead as of a few hours ago.

I've been on the fence about suppressors for a couple years. Moving and not knowing what state we would be moving to has kept me from doing it. Now that we've kinda settled, I'm more inclined to buy one. Now as of today the SHARE/HPA acts have been shelved indefinitely. Wouldn't hold my breath on this passing any time soon/if at all. So I guess I'm going to get a trust and go from there. It sucks, but I'm tired of waiting.

In light of Mandalay Bay I say go for it.

Silencerco just did a second round of layoffs, but I have a feeling demand will be ramping up now.

The HPA was definitely hurting suppressor companies since people were just waiting for it to pass instead of buying one.

Default Buy it now and a bump stock

The knee-jerk reaction is in full swing. They know that they cannot ban the weapons ( political suicide ) but they will all say. " See..., we banned silencers and bump stocks... are we not great public servants? "

I just feel sorry for the companies making these products who will be out of business because of a lunatic bean-counter ( accountant )

This rubber band effect will be temporary. They pass just like every other event.

See you guys in a few weeks once the shit passes.

Unless you have a lot of money to waste I say wait. Silencers are unbelievable high now. Plus, silencers are much to simple in construction to be worth the current prices.
