Nice idea, but that is why I have a Taurus Judge.

The shorter barrel of the Judge lowers the fps of the ammo compared to the shotgun.

For example the original ammo marketed for the Judge such as Federal's .410 Handgun offering was simply remarked shotgun buckshot ammo. After complaints from Judge reviewers/users about the ammo not reaching the marked specs, Federal simply remarked the boxes to what the shorter barrel was achieving. It was the same ammo but went from 1200fps out of a shotgun to 850fps from the Judge, basically loosing a third of it's energy out of the shorter barrel.

Here are the boxes to show what I mean. While the glare blocks it the item numbers in the upper right corners are the same, as is the SKU on the back.

20 gauge looks good, may have to take a look at that.

Makes no sense. Go 12ga or go home.

I really want one of these to pair with my S&W Governor.

Here is a link to a thread I posted at TexasGunTalk on the .410 that gives a bit of insight to its usefulness in home defense.

I initially had no interest in .410 guns, until I realized my wife had no interest in even touching my 12 gauge Mossberg. She was afraid of the recoil after shooting a 12G at an uncle's place a few years ago. I ended up stumbling into a deal on a .410 Mossberg 500E. My uncle has a Judge, and he likes it, and gave me some ammo to try out. I ended up getting some Federal 000, Federal #4, Hornady, and Winchester PDX1 and 000 shells. I took them to the range and blasted paper targets to see how they pattern and then shot water jugs to see how they compared to pistols, or other guns. Even the little .410 shredded them, and the recoil was not bad at all. It was a fun gun to shoot. As I get older, I have noticed, sometimes I can shoot whatever, and be fine. 12G, 308, Mosin M44, etc, and be fine. Other times, the recoil can bother me. Not sure why it's not consistent. But, we love the little 500E. For the defensive .410 shells, the price is comparable to 12G, but the target .410 shells seem more expensive. TriStar is releasing the Viper G2 in .410 I was thinking of getting for my daughter. I have a 12G Viper I love, and figured she may like to go go trap shooting with me.

A .410 like this was on my radar several years ago for my Dad to use. He's reached the point now though where even this would probably be too much.

MSRP of $700

If daughter doesn't have experience at Trap (or shooting shotguns in general) she might get a bit frustrated with the lower hit probability of the .410. The .410 throws a much smaller load of birdshot down range.

its not small enough for me. i wish they had a regular pistol grip style. not this birdshead grip also. makes it non appealing to me.

hell id pay the tax stamp or whatever it costs extra just for a ultra small pump shotgun. and not one of those ..... remington or mossberg conversions that some company makes i see all the time. those ones have a custom front foregrip pump that folds. dumb.... takes away from the original style and look of a pump. basically legal terminology aside, i guess i want a pump pistol shotgun for the cool factor.

i want to see just a ultra compact small pump shotgun you can easily and feasibly shoot one handed all day. just for the cool factor of it. pistol gripped with a regular pump in the front, not a vertical grip that gets in the way. .410 seems ideal, since they make revolvers and what not that shoot it.

sure i had plenty of pistol gripped small as legally possibly shotguns, and id shoot them one handed for fun sometimes, but damn there heavy, you aint gonna be able to shoot a 12 or 20 all day like that.

would have to be something a company builds from the ground up. id imagine 14-16" would be what id want overall total length.

they should take that .410 model, make it function at half the size and make it completely smaller and change the grip on it. even if its a tax stamp only thing, id buy it.

So just long enough for 1 in the chamber and 1 in the tube?

Yes, you'll eventually regret not having it in 12 gauge. Especially with the price of ammo and limited varieties for lesser gauges available for a reasonable price.

I use Federal Low Recoil #1 Buck in my 12ga and it is a perfect load for these. I would get a .410 one just for fun but I don't see too much use for it.

For example #4 buckshot in that thread shows as 9 pellets in the .410 vs a 12ga which has 27 pellets or 41 pellets.

Like I said go with the 12ga.

Yup. Wish they'd at least sell a wood slide that would go on there.

I'm doing some comparisons b/t the 410 and the 12 guage. I think I'll take the good advice here and get the 12 gauge. A local gun store has one for just about what I see them on gunbroker for, plus shipping, plus FFL... and I think it is cheaper buying them locally. I might have to stop on the way home.... LOL.
