Good guns, depends on price and condition. What is your expected use and or load?

Guy at a gunshow wanted to trade me one (1187) (not police) but I handled it: HEAVY!

If memory serves, it has a reputation for not cycling with normal length shells. Needs 3" to operate properly? I have an 1100, & did I mention that these are HEAVY!?

I have no experience with the 1187 police but I do duck hunt with a friend that has an 1187. The last couple of seasons it won’t cycle shells worth a crap. He cleans it, cleans it some more, took it to a gun smith who charged him $75 to do who knows what. Still an unreliable pos. If I’m going to have a heavy home defense shotgun it’s going to be a 590a1. If I want an auto home defense shotgun it would be a Benelli M4 no ifs ands or buts.

If you really want an semi auto police style shotgun go Beretta 1201/1301 or Benelli M series. The only way I would stick with Remington is with a pump 870 and an older model at that as Remington's recent quality has been shit.

I have 2 1187 field guns, One in 20ga and the other is a 12ga skeet model I converted to a 30 in field model
I have hunted with the 12ga for 25 years. The only thing that wont cycle the 20 ga is
walmart POS target loads. XXX loads and up work fine.
Last year I decided to check the gas O-rings during cleaning.
The were the original rings, 25 years old, brittle as hell and broke in 2 places but the gun still worked. So I can't speak to anyone's experience, but as far as I concerned,
the Remington 1187 has served me well for going on 26 years.

I have one (11-87 police) with the factory sights. It's built like a tank and runs fine. Pretty sure it's designed for full power ammo and if you want to fire low brass / lower pressure rounds Remington makes a "barrel seal activator" that may help (do not drill the gas ports larger). It's not designed for low power ammo. I treat it like any other shotty but lube it and pay attention to the "O" ring.

I put Winchokes in my barrel and backbored it along with a speed gate loading gate.

For an auto 12, the best deal going is the gen 1 1301 right now. Hell of a shotgun for under 700.

The 11-87 started production in 1987 so its been around a long time and LOTS of them in the field in various configurations.
Its gas operated unlike some of the recoil operated shotguns and generally softer on your shoulder in firing.

The police versions (as the 870's) uses all forged / milled steel parts and no MIM parts like extractors , etc. Its all steel, heavy and made for durability.

I put a few cans of Federal 00 with the flight control wads thu it and never missed a beat and patterns tight for extended range and narrow spread at close range.

A few mods but the same core gun / mine has factory protected sights.

Speed gate loader , make sure you shorten it a tad or your finger can get caught loading.

Winchoke tubes installed, and tritium front sight added.

Basic parkerized steel / old school.

Basicly like this. Sights bit different as not winged and rear is on barrel not receiver.
I liked the extra weight of it, felt good and well built.
Local pawn where I handled it asking 700, figured that a bit high, and would actually purchase elsewhere.
My only shotties have been pump, single, and saiga so I was wondering about the cycling. It'd be 2-3/4 buck, slug or Rio high brass bird for plinking, the Rio always ran fine in saiga.
Been thinking I wanted another slim profile tube gun but with that semi speed..

The 11-87P fit my needs perfectly for a beater shotty and LOTS of barrels and parts floating around if you want to mod it or change it up.

My little gun is similar but an NFA gun with a barrel a tad over 10".
It also has Winchoke tubes installed with a tritium front and back-bored barrel.

Two of my three shottys~

The fun size~

Choke tubes work on short barrels also~

Cal how does that 10" barrel pattern? Have you tried Federal's tactical buck shot in it?

I was fairly amazed at some testing that Billy Birdzell (w Remington at the time) did w James Yeager using a 14" barrel.

The patterns were MUCH tighter than I would have expected even out to 20-25 yards as I recall.

I am most definitely NOT a fan of James Yeager, but that set of tests was pretty useful.

The pattern is surprising and all I shoot is Federal 00 with the flight control wad with the same choke in my 11-87 and my shorty. Most people think its an "across the room" gun and with the barrel back bored and choked its a night and day difference in patterns.
