Lookin good! Wish I picked at least one of those up when they was still affordable. I'm just glad I have my one 91/59. Paid I think around $250 years back. Crazy what the prices are on these things now.

I only own one, a 1946 Izhevsk, but I love it above & beyond all of my other hunting rifles (a .270 & three 30-06 Winchester Model 70s & a Winchester Model 94).

The M44 is the straight shooter, with iron sights, that always brings home the bacon. That 7.62x54R cartridge smacks down feral hogs like the planet has been pulled out from under them.

And, oh yeah, the spike bayonet comes in VERY handy when I walk up on them & have to poke to make sure they're not playing possum.

That's the only one I still have. Mines a 1945 Tula nonrefurb and it's a straight shooter with an excellent trigger. I paid 75 big ones about ten years ago. I've put more new production 54r through it than what I paid for the rifle. I honestly don't know how much surplus I've put through it or the og soldiers before me.

Nice M44 group^^^^^^

I always liked the Mosin Nagant short rifles and collected them some years ago. The prices did go up a good bit.
I was able to get the Russian years of production., 1943-1948 and the various., Chinese, Romanian, Hungarian, Yugoslavian variants and the dual date MO, 91/59 and 91/38.
Still like and shoot them.
Doesn't take too many rounds to get your fill of shooting one though., compared to AK recoil etc.

I've got a 1955 all matching counter-bored Romanian and the wife has a 1946 mix-master non-counter-bored Izhevsk refurb.

Back in the days of unlimited cheap surplus x54, we used to spend hours at the range vaporizing water filled milk jugs with those things. Good times.

The carbine length mosins are fun as hell, and the fireball thrown off is always cool.

they have seriously climbed in price.

Wish i had gotten one when they were cheaper. I just have two 91/30's (one bubba'd). I think i like the handiness of the shorter bubba'd one, sure id like a factory shorty.

Yes. Try a soft point 200gr for some real vaporization. Much better than FMJ. Used Metal gallon paint cans filled with water are my favorite

What do they go for nowadays? Got all mine at Big 5 for $99 Got one of their last M38s for $129

The short barrel Mosin Nagant rifles like the M38, M44, T53, 91/38 and 91/59 are $300-$500 +depending on condition and country of origin.

Ordinary 91/30's are $225-$250 and up depending on type etc.

Used to be you could buy/have a "collection" for under $1000., not now.

I obtained the short rifle group of the Mosin Nagant rifles:
* Russian 1943-1948 years of production plus the MO and XO marked
* Chinese, Romanian, Polish, Hungarian and Yugoslavian rework
* 91/38 and 91/59 and M38.

Fun to shoot. I haul out two or three at a time to shoot some rounds.
One thing nice is that 54r shooting out of a short barreled rifle does not take long to "get your fill". Built-in ammo conservation.

the long barreled PU or PEM or PSL's are a bit more smooth shooting.

My youngest (13) discovered the M44 last fall; we both got a laugh when we compared it to the .30-06 I bought him. The Mosin is almost pleasant. The M44 is one of his favorites. I sold two tins of ammo before he fell in love with it.....wish I hadn't. Still have plenty, but more is better these days. I still want one of the nice Polish versions, kicking myself for not buying one a year or so ago at a gun show, in nearly unissued condition for $400. Now I can't find them like that for even $500. Sooner or later one will turn up reasonable, and it will be mine!

There is little ballistic difference in a 54r vs 30'06 cartridge. Weapon type, weapon weight, projectile weight and ergos etc., might vary in perceived recoil etc.

In honor of this thread, I took mine out yesterday, and longing for that sweet M44 pain, put 50 surplus rounds through it. It had been over a year so I'd forgotten how fun it is. Now I'm already aching to get it back out and shoot some more.

my Russian 1944 arsenal rebuild is a great shooter. Good hardwood stock, fits me real well. Keeps getting better looking with age and a little care. This is the third one of these for me, Had a 69.00 Chinese in the 80's, rough s a cob, shot well. A Hungarian I sold off, nice one also. It is in the Midwest now. Awesome piece of history to torch off, anyone who fires it alsawys has a big grin afterward.
