Seems like the way to go.

I would try to avoid welding it to the barrel. The originals are tack welded to the RSB only. But that is just me.

I missed that last part. I agree with this.
I personally don't like messing with barrels at all if I can help it. That includes anything that could bring [even parts of the barrel] to temps that could disrupt the heat treatment. I don't even like cutting on barrels that I want to be as accurate as possible [including flutting] for fear of creating unevenness in structural rigidity.

The attachment plate/pivot has a curved portion that slides under the RSB and extends to the left side of the RSB. It is then tack welded to the bottom outer area of the RSB.

Not a complex part but not many to be found.

Before APEX offered the handles I needed the carry handle for an RPK that had the pivot but no handle. I purchased the whole assembly to get the handle. Did not need the pivot.

Has anyone seen complete carry handle and mounting bracket offered for sale anywhere ?

Hey thanks for posting that picture. Welding it on seems like it may be easier than finding an AES-10B atm. I need a good RPK. Can feel it down in them bones, mayne.

I don't remember getting an email but I'll have to check.

I cannot believe someone would bitch that their Kalashnikov variant came with a side mount. And I cannot believe poor Atlantic would try to explain their position on this. Holy cow. Side mount is one of the most solid, best ways to mount an optic on your AK.

this is equivalent to being able to purchase a vehicle with or without anti-lock brakes. OH GOD NO!! I DONT WANT ANTI-LOCK BRAKES!!!

the comment with "well you can include them with rivets in case the the guy purchasing wants to add it himself" is also hilarious. Not all AK owners have the ability / equipment to do this. Its not the most difficult job, but definitely not a entry-level modification.

yikes.

An optics rail on later models of AK pattern rifles became quite common. It would be a customer requirement and may be more common in export than domestic Romanian military?
A side rail is a nice accessory.
If one cares., I'm not certain the rail offered by Atlantic is the 7.62 Romanian version however. Dunno? but the ones I have seen are different.

Original here AFAIK.

i would take it further and say that the side mount is a necessity.

The barrel was AK builder in the white, pressed on RSB then welded the tab to the barrel with a small spot weld. Pushed the RSB back off and sent the barrel next door from my work to Parker trutec to get nitride treated.

After the barrel was nitrided I repopulated the barrel the welded the tab to the RSB. So Iím thinking the small spot weld would be fine after 1000 degree nitride

Each to their own on having an optics rail. A lot depends on the owners intent, ie., shooter, collector, hunter etc.
Some prefer not to have the rail.
Example on a 1963 dated Romanian Md63 or an early Md65 underfolder., an early dated RPK from the 1960's etc or a type 3 early milled Bulgarian or Polish etc.
Virtually no underfolders have optics rails due to obstruction with the underfolder to mount an optic.

No big deal., but just my take on it., is to avoid welding on a barrel except when absolutely necessary.
The originals were welded to the lower left edge of the RSB.
Spot or tack welding being a bit different than uniform heat and controlled cool down in nitride treatment is a different process.
I thought they used salt bath nitride at 550 to 575 degrees on barrels but not sure about that.

That's awesome, congratulations on the new addition. They have been flying off the shelf at AF.

Out of stock again.

Point of order...

"Night fighter" RPKs would have the rail, flash hider and a NV optic.

Not really common, but it was a thing

Rails are Awesome.

I received one of these for a customer and it was, appearance wise, in considerably better condition than battlefield pickup. Good - very good condition, wood and metal.

Iíd say less than 10% of the people buying these would have the means or capability to add a rail, so thatís a pretty poor marketing strategy.
