Default SVD/Tiger vs Legion Vepr

So, I have always wanted a SVD rifle, just can't fathom the 6 to 11k price tag... I recently found a Tiger rifle on GB for $3,850, which isn't "bad" I guess.

Then a friend of mine pointed me to this:

https://www.legionusa.com/vepr-rifle...svd-clone.html

Less than 1/2 the cost, and looks nice. BUT, not an SVD. I know they both shoot the same accuracy wise, but I kinda feel like the Vepr would be a compromise I may regret later.

So for those who own a Tiger or NDM type, hold out and convert the Tiger, or just get the Vepr?

If you have the money get the SVD

Its like comparing an MP5 and a Sub2000 in cool factor

Yup.

Sold 2 PSLs after getting a 54r Vepr. Mine is still not as accurate as the Tiger, but way better than the PSLs.

Magazines are still an issue with the 54r Vepr. Csspecs has helped this a lot, but they are still single stack.

If going Vepr, I'd recommend a .308, probably 20 inch barrel. You get double stack mags, and a good chance of better accuracy.

There is nothing wrong with a Vepr. Wonderful rifles and for the money will shoot probably as well as the SVD / Tiger with surplus ammo. Veprs have excellent QC and are regarded being about the best stamped Kalashnikov you can get

That being said there is really no comparison to the cool factor of the SVD against everything else. With the right ammo it is really a sub MOA rifle despite nay-sayers who refute the claims

I have personally shot .93" with handloads from my NDM86 in 54R, and .74" with my former 308 NDM. On a random day with my Tiger I shot 1.5" with 200gr match 54r ammo...they will shoot but it all depends on the ammo

TxZen, you are mostly to blame for my fixation on the rifle and Russian optics as well. I see awesome pics on your website of these things, then have to have them!

Thanks for the info. I am set on the Tiger, already found the conversion parts. Just waiting for .gov to give me my money back.

How bad is the front sight to get off? My SLR106UR was pretty easy with penetrating oil...

Front sight on the Vepr? Mine was on there very tightly. A press would be nice for removal.

I've had at least 5 PSLs, couple VEPRs in big boy rounds and one Tiger.
Still have the tiger, have none of the PSLs or VEPRs.

Comparing a Mustang GT to a Dodge Viper. They'll both get you from A to B and the GT can be made to compete very well with the viper. But everyone knows what the better/cooler car is. If you were getting a rifle just for accuracy, go with a bolt action.

Or do what most do.. Take your VEPR and dress it up as a dragunov so they can pretend.

VEPR is a great gun, but don't buy it if what you really want is the dragunov.

Well shit, I am a bad influence again

I blame all the cool kids that came before me and had such neat stuff that I wanted to experience myself.

I will say this though...I've owned a total of 4 NDM's and Tigers and still love them as much as when I first bought one. The shine has never worn off and neither has the giddy feeling of first buying one.

And here is another bad influence. I regret nothing haha

Damn. Very nice! What are your favorite optics for the SVD type? I was really eyeing that PS07 Kalinka had listed, but they're gone now.

I'm a huge fan of the PSO-1 and it works as designed but lately have been branching out and trying a few combinations. On the Tiger I am running the PSU 1-4 for something different but I really want another ACOG or BCO optic for it. I was considering the Elcan for a while too but ended up selling it. 1 or 4 x just isn't my thing. Ultimately I may go with a thermal if I can find the time to get back into hog hunting

I like the PS07 with the dragunov reticule but otherwise don't care for the magnification. 7x is too high for me. It's a good scope though, but I like a wider FOV rather than magnification

Overall I would say anything with a 4x or less magnification would be a good start. Use the RS or NPZ mount and good rings and really most anything will do. I had a Zeiss 3-7x that I got in trade and it was really nice. Also the Leatherwood CMR is kick ass based on shooting the ones that friends have, and Primary Arms keeps coming out with cool stuff all the time too.

I actually might add a section to the website about US optics and what works best on AKs. I have ACOGS, BTO, RMRs, MRO and other stuff so maybe it's time to branch out and start buying budget optics too

I have a fair amount of time behind my .308 VEPR and others' 7.62x54r VEPRs and greatly enjoy it, but I've also had the opportunity to shoot a buddy's SVD. I have to agree with ncreptile - if you want an SVD, don't settle for something that only superficially resembles it. They're different guns and you can tell when shooting them.

If someone were to make a domestic SVD in .308, -06, and it's native x54r and could keep the out-the-door price at or below $2K with occasional seasonal sales, they'd never keep them in stock. Lord knows I'd be in for a .308 rifle on day one.

you know you want to scratch that itch. Do it. You only live once. I had an NDM-86. It was very cool. I knew I'd never get all the fun out of it it had to offer, so I let it go. I don't regret letting it go, but I certainly would regret never having it.

If you have the money get the Tiger. It's funny how the US Army tried to preach that all combloc weapons were junk yet people are getting under 2 inch groups out of those, many like 1.3 inches of an MOA and the MR762 is rated for 1.5 MOA.

The Dragunov was the first rifle of its genre.

I like the 20 inch Dragunovs a lot. I'd find the folding stock and get an ACOG and a quality side mount.

Having a gun "dressed up" to look like an SVD is like driving around a 4 cyl Mustang, maybe it looks cool, but, it doesn't have what it needs under the hood.

i figured.... but i was the only one that posted a pic of a vepr with "SVD like" furniture.

you guys are crazy though... the Vepr is not an SVD... but it is an awesome gun. and almost every aftermarket stock set for these is the SVD style. so of course thats what people are gonna put on them.

We compared side by side good customized long barrel Vepr and Tiger with good ammo.
Till 300 meters accuracy were very close. Good shooter with good optics can do groups very close to 1MOA. More distance - difference in mech and constitution start playing.
In base variant both - Tiger have sure better accuracy.
But such Vepr in x54 have some interesting (for hunters) advantage - due to one row mag bullets of SP ammo does not damage on feeding tray. And gun itself shorter and lighter than Tigr

I would like to thank you all for pushing me in the right direction. I bought a Tiger rifle today from a local person. Couldn't be happier! Taking it to the range tomorrow. I've already ordered every part and accessory out there.

Thanks all. Headed to the range in a few. Not sure about the massive 1P21 scope, but I'll see how it does.
