Default IMI Razor Core 5.56

I did some testing of IMI Razor Core 5.56 today and I thought I'd share the results.

For those who don't know Razor Core is the IMI copy of MK262 using the 77gr SMK.

I was using an 18" SPR with a Wilson 1/8 223 Wylde barrel. My scope is a Strike Eagle 1-6 using their AR-BDC reticle.

I also brought some Prvi 75gr OTM for comparison.

The wind was light and blowing straight uprange so no practical effect.

My SPR shoots the Prvi pretty well with 1.5" groups consistently. The IMI was a little better at 1 to 1 and a quarter. Both rounds were hitting pretty much the same spot at 100 so that made life easier. I am not a benchrest shooter so the rifle and ammo are certainly even better than that.

At 300 yards both made easy headshots on a 3/4 scale steel silhouette. Misses were the fault of the shooter.

So both rounds are good at 300.

The difference really stood out when I started shooting at the 700 yard gong. It's an 18" round gong so without having to deal with wind both rounds should make easy hits.

The AR-BDC reticle stops at 600 yards so I had to estimate hold-over.

First I shot the Prvi. I took a stab at the holdover and squeezed off a round. It was short. Bad short. I cranked up the holdover and tried again. Still short. Even more. Just under the gong. A bit more and finally a clang. I fired a few more rounds and got a couple more hits. It was a challenge because I was using so much holdover with no good way to be consistent every shot.

Then I switched to the IMI. I tried to use the same holdover as the Prvi and the shot went 3 feet OVER the gong. Holy shit, the bc of the SMK really makes a difference. I lowered the reticle and shot again. Clang. Once I had the holdover for the Raor Core it was very easy to make hits at 700. With the distance and the other people shooting I sometimes didn't hear a clang but no dust meant I was hitting steel.

So I'll be ordering more Razor Core. Outstanding performance for ammo that sells for less than 0.75 a round.

Thanks for the review Cole, nice practical explanation. I've been looking at adding some more of this to my stash as well. Saw some at SG Ammo today for $335 for 500Rds.

Sounds like good ammo, but good lord, 75 cents a round for 223...

I still have a couple of 1000 75 Hornadys that I paid 12 cents apiece for, add about 10 cents for powder and primer, almost unlimited brass, all it takes is a little of my time. I can do about 100 an hour on my Lee hand press, if I had to bill as an IT consulting my ammo will be more expensive, but I like reloading.

Any opinions on how Razor compares to Black Hills' 77grn OTM?

Agreed.

Factor in some down time and you will save a ton of money shooting in the long run. You won't save money per say, but your cost per round will drop considerably and allow you to shoot more...and more often.
