Thanks for the pics. These will definitely help me with my milled Chinese build.

The only thing I missed taking a picture of was the rear sight. I'll see if I can get that rectified in a day or two.

Is there anything else anyone would like to see?

Would it be possible to get a picture of the recoil spring base, and the bolt face and sides?

Thanks

Are you referring to the spring base/slot in the receiver or the base of the spring and rod?

Cool pictures, looks like you might have a Soviet recoil assembly. I noticed your rifle has quite a few "0" proof marks on it.

I was looking at my 1980's 56S-3 and noticed the same proof marking on the rear trunnion tang.

That's interesting. The bolt is not s/n'd to the receiver, but the bolt carrier is. I wonder what/who's proof marks are on the recoil rod base are.

A good clear picture of the serial number on it might help, sometimes the font can determine origin.

That's the best one I have so far. I'll retake the picture again and see if I can get a crisper image.

OK, here we go with a few additional pictures.

S/N side of recoil rod base:

Rear of front sight base:

Bottom of gas block:

Receiver rear tang:

(Extreme rear of receiver bottom has required BATFE marking when weapon was reactivated by Chuck Hudak)

The font looks Chinese, but I have only ever seen them put the last 5 digits on the recoil rod, not only 4. A 10 million S/N should have the last 5 digits on the recoil rod base. The proof marks also do not look Chinese at all, but im going to guess it is either a very early Chinese made part with an early variant Chinese proof mark, or a Soviet supplied part that the Chinese used in early type 56 assembly.

It's been a while and I have a little more information about my AK. I was in contact with Frank Iannamico and we exchanged some information. He confirmed that this is indeed an M22 export version. Both he, and another well known weapons specialist, surmise it was a sales sample originally sent to a foreign government. Frank also confirmed that the recoil spring and rod assembly is an early Russian one. He said that this was not unusual as many early Chinese AKs often had Russian components. Frank also sent me a page from his 2nd edition AK book documenting some of the Russian proof marks found on the recoil spring rod. That page is displayed below.

Beautiful piece you have there. I have a couple transferable converted to full auto AKs, but not a real deal original bring back full auto like that. Those are very VERY rare. One sold on Julia a little while back for $150,000. Enjoy her! Beautiful!

I'm late to this thread, but this thing is glorious. Trying to get my hands on a 56 as my dream rifle, and this thing is 10 times cooler. Thanks for sharing!

I thank all you gentlemen for the very kind words. They are much appreciated. I just noticed that some of my picture postings are not coming through. I can assure you that the photos have not been pulled and the problems are with photobucket dot com. I have no clue what in the hell they are doing. It may be time to find another picture hosting service.

Can you try to use Imgur to re-upload the pics? I would really love to see this rifle!

It's the barrel cleaning rod. They sell on eBay for about ten bucks.

I just noticed that our close and dear friend Photobucket has effed-up my pictures. I now have them on Postimg, but this site will not let me post them. It blows away the URL and replaces it with asterisks. Oh well. I tried.

Here is an example:

I use Imgur. Best free photo hosting site even before Photobucket took its toys and went home.
