Default Vektor R4 v. Galil ARM differences?

I have an ARM kit near completion. I was wondering what are the differences in the handguard and handguard retainer between the ARM and R4? Recently sprung an interest in SA stuff and thought it would be cool to go the R4 route instead of ARM.

Or could it be built so the handguards could be interchangeable? Just a random thought.....

Muzzle brake (about the same)
Handguard (longer Obviously) early models had wood handguards ($$$$$)
Rear retainers (no carry handle, although early models came from israel and the carry handle was on the retainer, then they sent carry handle retianers without the actual hole cut)

Front retainers are a little beefier

Barrels are 1-12 twist

receivers have dual lightening cuts

little difference in trigger group

Some variations in recoils assembly as well as Bipod

Metal mags had dates (later mags are poly and very cool )

buttstock is long and they had variations. Early ones had Galil stocks

pistol grip shorter and a lil beefier and has sides squared

Gasblocks are similar but different

Gas tubes similar though different

Top cover very silar though different weld pattern on rear

Nutria brown was the color of choice ....More like poop brown but stil I guess cool...

Im sure I forgot something.....If your gonna go South then Go South I say!

The early R4's were issued with carry handles.

Later they were all serviced by having the carry handles removed and the firing pins and bolts modified for a rubber, "spring".

The ammunition was also changed later to have much less sensitive primers.

This would later cause the rejection of Steyr AUG rifles by South Africa because the AUG would not reliably fire the South African ammunition.

This was thought to be due to the plastic hammer, but no solution was ever sought as the rifles were just immediately rejected.

The last R4's were the R4A1's.

These don't have the rubber in the bolts on the firing pins as the rubber was breaking down and melting.

The newer firing pins have a squared off rear end that fills the channel where the rubber would have been in earlier rifles.

The semi-auto series continued to get rubber firing pin springs and never got the latest firing pins.

Just to add to allesennogwat, the last semi's (LM4)possibly used the squared off free floating pin. I say this as I have a LM built on the Galil receiver (export to Israel cancelled with change in government). This has the latest firing pin.

Totally aware of this, quite interesting how they just shipped them over uncut until they got their tooling together...

Alright, so I guess I won't be going for a true clone. How about the handguard? Can I use the front retainer I have in my ARM kit? Also would this likely be a permanent mod that couldn't be reversed on the fly? Say if I wanted to throw the ARM handguard back on?

The R4 retainer slot sit further forward that the Galil...If you want to use them both (Ive done it so why not) then you would need 2 slots cut in your barrel...

Yes the Galil retainer will work too .....

Now that Ive made my rounds I gotta get to work

Thanks mullicrk! I'll keep that in mind before I send her out to be built.

That is a early Galil ARM cover Old Cal, it looks like the deflector is missing? Spot welds on some of those werent so hot.

The mid 80 SAR or ARM Galil cover would be a nice comparision but the pics look great. Thanks.

Misha is one of the lucky ones to own a pre-ban version of it. He compares it to the Galil.

I will say the R-series stocks look really cool... But if you are not tall and lanky... Not great to shoot standing.. That little extra length really puts the weight forward. I will also note there are 2 different types of South African hinge blocks.

I used a Arm block with a R stock and it locks up fine but when closed the stock sits about an inch off the receiver.
