Default No more Golden Tiger 545??!

Posting in here because it directly effects the 74. Apparently There won’t be any more golden tiger 545😞 I messaged SG to check and see when the next shipment is due in and he replied with this...

“Golden Tiger is probably out of the 5.45 busienss forever, the factory is basically bankrupt. I do have Barnaul and Wolf mil-spec due in 10 to 14 days

Thank you
Sam
SGAmmo”

Kinda sad cause this was pretty good ammo, we still have a few other good ones and us maker Hornady’s prices are coming down but for a gun that has been harder to get ammo for each year , this is sure a big blow. What’s your thoughts??

it's not a big blow by any means, it was extremely scarce to begin with...

the big blow was losing 7n6

I agree that 7N6 was a big blow but when you only have a few manufacturers ammo being imported, it sucks when you lose another one.

As rstrobel pointed out this is just a minor blow. But with the Trump admin preparing yet more Russian sanctions over Syria it certainly won’t be the last.

We’re enjoying a season of plenty, take advantage because tougher times are on the horizon.

It would behoove all 5,45 x 39.5 AK aficionados to pick up, after they arrive, oodles and gobs of the Russian Barnaul and Wolf mil-spec Sam has on its way to his warehouse.

Must keep all the puppies properly fed.

Glad I bought a shit ton a few months back, GT is/was a good commercial alternative to 7η6 for storage as it is lacquered and sealed

Is the market really not there for someone to produce 5.45 shell casings within the US? How hard is it? Does Hornady buy imports just because it’s cheaper for now?

I guess what I’m getting at is - if the import market dried up, would US capitalism kick in to fill the void?

Sure.. at damn near 50 cents a rounds from what this place has gathered and the thought that Romania or Bulgaria will be able to match Russian volume & pricing is slim. Yes, right now Hornady imports cases from Barnaul. Star-line MIGHT be able but not likely, and PPU is at best reluctant to make the caliber. Poland is also, as the forum has already talked about, unlikely to make the caliber but they have been outstandingly kind to sell more Beryl green magazines so caliber conversions might be in order. I don't know what it would take to covert, say a SLR 104, to 5.56 but I know there is the gunsmitthing subforum for those things.

Bought 2 k GT a few days before it went oos just a few months ago. Recently bought 3k of RAS 69g from fleet farm for .14/rd. Also found some 7n6 locally, 1200rds for $175. Keep your eyes open. There is food to feed your 74 around.

It's also still ammunition. Your reasoning is weak to say the least. And since you mentioned it, you actually knew this belonged in ammunition sub-forum.
But I guess posting it here keeps us from having to see the same subject rehashed every other week in that other sub forum.
The real question here is- should we use the word "effects", or affects?
Too bad we don't have a grammar forum huh?

Cheap steel cased ammo makes the market for US made ammo tough. Hornady is going the premium hunting ammo route and still uses imported steel cases to avoid tooling up.

People will pay more for the hunting loads, not so much for plain old FMJ blasting ammo. All the current US produced reloadable brass case 7.62X39 ammo is around 60-80 cents a round compared to the 20-30 cents a round for the imported steel case stuff. And as Winchester has shown with their steel cased 9mm ammo line, they are not likely to be offering a huge discount for steel if they went that route.

I'm sure if all imported 5.45 dried up someone would step in and make some here, but the cost would be so high sales would be low. Which of course keeps the ammo cost high!

I got a email from century a couple days ago stating Vympel made 5.45 and .223 will be in stock next month.

They have been importing 7.62x39 for a bit now.

Barnaul makes and sales different kind commercial 5.45, you could get it right now and it is not worse to Vimpel/GT. Vimpel is for sure is in trouble but factory belongs to the federal Russian goverment and it will survive.

He beat me to it.

Vympel
is the production facility for the purple lacquer sealed Golden Tiger branded ammo if memory serves.
This is where all my last few batches came from and they all had the proper sealers.

Red Army Standard is Century imported and has several facilities it uses for production, so make sure it's the purple sealed

I assume Romania has some in-stock ? Unless the alphabet folks will classify it as equivalent to 7n6. I realize it takes a while to put an order together.

Not good news even though GT was scarce anyway. Any reduction of 5.45 is bad news. Hopefully the sky's not falling.

what we need to do is write manufactures what we want. if we have enough people asking, they know there is demand and more likely to be interested in making it or keep doing it

What demand?!

When shit is not there- filers are whining and crying. Out of no where pros come out of every hole talking about fancy things , as if they are ready to drop 4 grand in a snap if it was available. "If wasn't for sanctions, i would....."

When shit is there - all of the sudden nothing but crickets, window drooling, and countless threads about "I wish i had money, what you guys think about my $25 red dot on a wasr?!"

We been through this shit before countless times.
Import stockpiles of unobtanium ammo for a whiny Bob Files, and what does Bob do? Buys 1 range pack and sits on it for years.

^^ what he said. The community just let inventory sits when it's plentiful and hoard up on rifles. Then when inventory dries up... we whine and cry about "we wish we would've...". I have several buddies that own multiple rifles, yet mags and ammo are anemic to say the least.

Century says they are supposed to get more 545x39 in stock 5/18/18. They have been sourcing from Vympel. It might be the same.

RSA ammo ? When Rob Ski tested Romania made 5.45x39 awhile back it was trash. The new stuff ? My experience with Romania made 5.45x39, it constantly failed to extract . My pals had the same issue.

The 'new' RAS is Vympel (GT), not Romanian.

More RAS Vympel (7.62x39) for the same price as GT @ $222/1000 shipped.

Awaiting the 5.45...

Do we know that it is Vympel through personal observation? Been buying GT from SG but the tap is shut off for me, soi I need an alternate source. Thanks!
