I that's the standard, then the P-51 is probably an even better candidate than the A-10, right?

I stand corrected, the new sign for the 110th is a current mission... The MQ-9
I do miss the A10s, I enjoyed watching the Military demo at this years airshow!

What's really needed is a low cost, high performance aircraft for Adversary use to keep from burning up the airframe life of the F-22 and F-35.
If you do the math, the F-35 depreciates $15,000 for every flight hour.
That's what makes aircraft like the A-4 and F-5 so valuble.
The Navy learned this lesson the hard way by burning up the available service Life of the FA-18. Some of the Super Hornets are already nearing the end of their service life.
Service Life extension programs are still just stopgap measures.

Companies like Draken are already filling that need.

I have worked for some of those companies.
Draken's A-4's have been Modified to Gen 4 standards.
My point is, no matter how capable, The F-5 and A-4 currently being used are, they are still very old aircraft. The L-39 and BAE Hawk are also capable aircraft, but they are also very dated designs. A new low cost, high performance aircraft will be needed in the near future to replace these aircraft.
