Default I broke down and bought a crap favela gun

Yep, its true. The $199.99 and free shipping, $40 rebate, and free NRA membership were too good to pass up at the price. I broke down and bought a Taurus 85.

Feel free to point and laugh at the retard who bought something made for skinny dudes riding bitch on a scooter.

So what's the word with these model 85s? Is it worth holding onto or is it a burner?

I love the little old things ..Have used a few pre lock guns ..For what they are they are great ..Trigger works fine for carry ..Grips /lockwork etc is a-ok

I think it is one of the better guns they make ..Really everything
a basic 38 stub should be for a good price

If they brought out a no lock model yeah I would def look at getting one or two to keep as truck / tackle guns

$159. You can toss it just like the NRA membership.

Well................................at least you shouldn't have any trouble finding ammo for it these days. Besides..................everyone should have a decent throw down gun. Right?

I think this one is gonna get the Trollo cholo treatment. I will have to range test it against my rubber dummy and see what's what.

Too bad you couldn't find the 357mag model for that price.
Cholo treatment?? You mean something like this?

It's not that bad tio. I had the 85 and the 905 and they were both pretty nice. Bust that bitch down and toss them if you want but I would keep it in the car so you got a jam-free burner.

I know a handful of guys who report great things about theirs. I wasn't so lucky with mine. I could get a round or two off then it would lock up the cylinder so tight that it took some serious effort to get it open again. It repeated this with multiple brands and weights of ammo, and four shooters.

I let mine go full disclosure to an aspiring smith who was confident he could get it working right. Unknown if he ever did. I just didn't have the patience to send it in and wait.

Most of them seem to be great. I'd say mine was the exception rather than the rule. Congrats! That's a heck of a deal for one.

Have and have had a lot of Taurus revolvers. Never have had a problem. I don't need another snub 38 right now or I would be all over these rebate deals.

Bought one used a decade ago, used the hell out of it and carried it and a kel-tec for a few years. Nothing bad on my end, but experiences vary. Wheel guns are just cool, always a summer carry, and large frame for hunting/truck gun. No magazine springs to weaken or ejected mag in the glove compartment from off roading.

Good to hear from the files that this little thing is a piece of shit, but a functional one.

15-20 yrs ago they were very well made, today a crap shoot.
Hope you get a good one. For the money spent its a worthy
gamble in my opinion. Will be ordering one myself.

I owned a Taurus 85 for quite awhile and I never had any problems with it. This was years back though, so maybe that’s why.

Taurus make good pistols and revolvers. The only thing I don't like is the magazine disconnect on some of them.

Sounds like a good deal since I bought a revolver.

Damn, the concensus here seems to be that the 85 is good to go! Pretty cool seeing how it's S&W competitor is twice the price!

If you can read this, El Trollo fell off.

I remember buying my mother a Taurus .38 about 22 years ago. I don't remember the model but it was stainless with I believe walnut grips. It felt great and shot very nicely. I once heard that my twin brother claimed the gun after my mother passed away. If I could get another one of those back for $159 I'd do it in a minute.

Similar story here.
Bought one for my mother 25+ years ago.
Was a great little shooter and I have no idea what ever happened to it after she died.
I did buy my wife a poly 85 about 2 years ago and it's a piece of shit.

I don't think I could buy a poly revolver.

Make sure that it works in double-action. I had a Taurus 617 that I shot in single-action for about a year to hone my aiming, but when I started shooting double-action, there would be a no-fire about 2 or 3 out of 7 rounds. The primer would be dimpled, but no ignition.

When it happened, there was a guy in the next lane who also had a Taurus revolver. I asked if his had ever malfunctioned. He said, No. I then asked him if he ever fired his in double-action. He thought about it for a second, then said, Not really, then proceeded to try. His Taurus failed to ignite about 2 out of 6 rounds.

My friend has a Rossi, made by Taurus. Same thing: Works fine in single action, frequent misfires in double-action.

I sent my Taurus back to the factory twice and still they couldn't fix it. If you bought the 85 for a carry piece, you want to make sure it fires 100% in double-action, or learn how to fan the hammer like Clint Eastwood.

When I checked a few years ago, Taurus revolvers usually went for about $150-200 less than comparably-sized S&W or Rugers. <$159 is super cheap. There's probably a reason for that.

Good looking out - that's something I will eyeball. I wonder if that's an issue that a new mainspring can fix.

That's the issue my wife's poly 85 had.
First 100 or so rounds were flawless, then misfire/light strikes on DA.
I replaced the mainspring and it didn't help.
Never sent it back to Taurus as I lost the receipt and they stated they would not warranty service without original receipt (which is why I swapped the spring myself).

Since "the Taurus Unlimited Lifetime Repair Policy™ is a commitment to repair selected Taurus firearm models FREE OF CHARGE for the lifetime of the firearm" it would seem they were fibbing to you about the original receipt. They warranty their guns even if you're the 4th owner...

http://www.taurususa.com/repair-policy.cfm

The part that sucks about their warranty is you have to pay to ship it to them.

I bought a model 85 for my sister, the DA only one with the bobbed hammer, way back in the day and it always fired. Wasn't match grade accurate, but since most encounters happen up close (and she was a terrible shot anyway) not too much of an issue. Traded it off before she moved Down Under with her hubby.

A friend bought a .357 model, the internal hammer copy of the S&W "Centennial" model. This was during the height of the Obama/Sandy Hook panic and they were apparently running 27 hours a day 8 days a week because it was crap. The muzzle wasn't crowned, in fact it still had the burr in the bore where they parted it off in a lathe. He asked me to do a trigger job on it since it was rather stiff. First step is dry fire it a bunch to smooth up any rough areas and to show where things were rubbing.

Made it to about 20 or so before it locked up! Suggested he send it in for warranty service, that's when he found out he had to pay for shipping for them to repair the lemon they made. So I took the sideplate off to see what had happened. A pin had walked out and jammed things up, should have been staked in place. Got it working again and he sold it quick.

OTOH, I bought 3 of their PT111 G2 models within the last 2 years and every one so far has never missed a beat. No complaints on workmanship either. So you could get a winner, or you could get the 4:45 Friday special...

I just bought a model 640 S&W Centennial Airweight, and I have to say S&W quality has fallen a lot. Most of the internals were MIM parts, and from the factory 2 of the sideplate screws were chewed up. Looks like they used too narrow a screwdriver.

Invested another 20 bucks in a spring kit and extended firing pin, got the trigger pull probably halved and down around 12 lbs. J-Frame triggers will never equal a good K-Frame trigger, but this one is still terrible even after polishing a bit. Manageable, but not what could have been achieved with one made 20 years ago... Oh, and Midway had the screws for less than 5 bucks so at least it doesn't look too bad from the outside now!

Honestly, I think I would prefer a good older Taurus to the newer S&W stuff. Especially considering the usual price difference!

No, I call those "fuck beast" and "whorepig"

I also tend to shoot those with substantially more potent loads.

For that price, it sounds like a pretty good deal. Most of the owners like them.

I'm very happy with my Ruger LCR-X, but I think it cost twice as much as your Taurus. For a weapon that only needs to fire reliably at a range of 10 feet or less, the Taurus (or the Ruger) should be just fine.

The only downside to your deal is the NRA membership. You just volunteered for years of Spam, harassing phone calls and fliers.

I've got a few of them. I like them. I prefer the newest production ones over my 10 year old ones. The early model 38s are pretty nice as well.

I've seen the good and bad with the poly models But I still want both the 38 and 357 just because I'm a snubbie whore.

So, if a Taurus 85 is a favela gun, what's an Armscorp .38?
