You would think, but after packing my desktop away, the struggle has been real with some of you guys.

Especially on Zens website, where only 40% of the screen is scrolling
Cellphones do a great job at scaling.

Pheenix11, for some of us 5.45 is like a girl that keeps going after you finish... Once you meet her, all other become irrelevant waste of time

After 12 years of only 5.45 folding stock rifles, last year I added one AK103 and one AKM, and picked up a fixed stock SLR105

Thanks on the compliment, but that's just part of it. One day I'll bust out the entire collection and take a photo of them all. I think I have 18 AK pattern rifles

That's weird. I routinely check the site with phones, laptops and other monitor sizes. I'm not a professional mind you but I do try to keep the site accessible

I think you need to upgrade that Pentium II and get something with some horsepower and resolution

Actually, I've got a similar issue with it--relatively new laptop with decent specs and monitor size.

I feel that way when shooting my SLR104. I want to make a commitment to her but everyone keeps saying she’s too flighty LOL.

Build a 5.56 barrel and save the 5.45 barrel.

Just one pressed pin holds them.

Wouldn't shooting out 5.45 barrel and then turning it into 5.56 sound more fun and logical ?

I kind of enjoy 5.56 in an AK.

Logical?

Save the 5.45 ammo as it may become collectable

I do like your idea how ever .

My advice is do a kit build 223 and keep the 5.45 as is
A kit build will allow some mag options like Galil if you do it right .

That's what I was going to do....until I came across an M90MP for a really good price.

Now I've got 3 in 5.45 and one in 5.56.

Not exactly according to plan but uh, well, um, ahhh, you know.

Bulgy AK74 kit + AK Builder .223 AK74 barrel + AK74 quality receiver + rivets + work = .223 AK74.

I picked up one of the AK Builder 5.56 barrels and put it away for the day that 5.45 is no more. Cheap insurance as far as I am concerned.

If I wanted a 5.56 AK right now? I think I might build one up using the AK Builder barrel and a Bulgarian parts kit. Or do as you did and find a ready built gun. I would consider the WASR or SAR 3 guns as wel as the M90np. If I could find one at a price I could afford I would definitely buy the Arsenal SLR 106's. The big difference would be Mags. Most all of the 223Rem AK take different mags and non of them are dirt cheap.

Just my .02 on it.

The two things I would like to see before buying into a 5.56 AK would be either Magpul selling steel reinforced PMAGs in 5.56 for the AK-74, or someone start producing a front trunnion with a higher mag catch shelf to properly seat and use metal Galil magazines. And if I am going through all of that effort I am probably not going to use an AK builder barrel but instead find a 4150v hammer forged chambered barrel blank with a 1 in 7 or 1 in 8 twist to have contoured to fit the AK and nitrided.

Well, I found a good deal on an M90MP so I bought it.

It shoots like a house on fire.

It has an Ace (I think) folder, Hogue front end, and A2 styles brake.

I wouldn't hold my breath on Magpul steel reinforced 5.56 mags.

I bought the M90. Based on one range day, I'm impressed.

I think I'll follow suit on the salting away a couple 5.56 barrels against a future need.

No, Magpul probably isn't going to do it. And I prefer metal magazines anyway. I might just buy a bunch of cheap steel Galil magazines, grind off the front clip and spot weld on a new one made to fit an AK trunnion. Then I could strip off the old finish, give them a fresh coat of Cerakote and new springs and have basically like new, steel, 5.56 mags for the AK.

Now, if only I could find someone able to turn a 1 in 8 4150V blank to AKM profile for me and nitride it, then I could probably build all of this on top of a brand new WBP parts kit.

I've always been a 7.62 AK guy. First rifle was a WASR-10 back in 2008, didn't buy an AR till about 2012. So, after several rifle purchased and stockpiling 7.62 and 5.56, I decided to get a SLR-106F so I could get 5.56/5.45 ballistics in a AK platform without having to commit to a new caliber. I recently purchased a 106cr. It's a good option for people like me that run 5.56 rifles. It may be blasphemy but it works for me.

Asking for a friend who is converting his 5.45 to 5.5k. Its a Saiga. what are his options for stocks, I didn't do any of the work on the rifle and haven't witnessed any, through conversation it came up about stocks and what his options are. He's interested in a Triangle stock but also a Polymer ( preferably plum ) stock.

The Saiga has a standard rear stock tang, after all the Klintonsh** is removed.

Would a Norinco 84s be ok ? (I realize the mags are about $75 each, but the guns can be had around $900.00.)

To make a Galil mag fit a AKM trunion just add a small bead of weld to the front mag lug and file it for a perfect fit.
I have done a bunch.

No need to remove anything.
Honestly iv you had to do a few I bet the modification could be done in under 5 minutes each.

Copes used to sell them pre modifed.

Some conversions AKM conversions will run Galil mags as is.
Is depends on the height of the carrier.
My original build ran them fine a later one needed the mod.
I just mod all the mags now to fit all the builds.

The tapco mags work fine.
Yea I know you needing battle proven mags fir SHTF.
I like the Tapco mag because there a bit easier to load and feed a little smoother.

No real need to store away barrels unless you find them cheap.

If 5.45 were to dry up I suspect you will a lot more choices for 223 conversion barrels for sale.

Good get on the M90 NP Porcupine. I love mine. The 18.25" barrel gives it a little extra over your average MForgery. Plus it's an AK.

Another under appreciated feature of these rifles is that you can free ride on the massive amount of info out there on 5.56 ballistics terminal and external. This also means you can use the same BDC reticles on all the scopes designed around 5.56 ballistics.

Primary Arms and a couple others have been doing a bang up job on 7.62x39, but that has been a recent effort. Also, PA's new 5.45 reticle, while much appreciated, is calibrated for 7n6, which is great if that is all you shoot, but many of us save that and shoot commercial 5.45, which is left unserved in the scope market.

My only minor gripe about the M90 NP besides the stock furniture is that it weighs damn near 8.5LBS. IMHO too heavy for a 5.56 gun, but then again the CZ Bren 805 is an 8.5 Lb 5.56 gun even tho its barrel is 16" I think.

And as I think of it, the Galil ACE in 5.56 also is about 8.5 Lbs and the Tavor is 8Lbs so maybe that is the way of the world now. Although my Arsenal SLR-106 FR is only 7.5 pounds naked and is very handy w the RS Regulate and PA MD-ADS red dot on it.

One thing I have noticed w my 5.56 AKs is that shooting wolf steel cased .223 through them feels A LOT like shooting 5.45. The Ammo probably is lower powered I guess.

If anyone has a link to the 5.56 barrels I would appreciate it.

Also, 1Big -- you mentioned the Tapco mags. Are these 5.56 AK mags? If so will they work in an Arsenal SLR-106 and a converted Saiga? I have some Pro Mag 5.56 AK mags (I know, I know) and they absolutely SUCK. I generally avoid Pro Mag like the plague, but was hoping against hope that they might actually work.

Also just wanted to confirm precisely which guns you have used the modified Galil mags in. I have a few 5.56 AKs and will stack a few if there is a good chance I can use them someday.

ETA: inspired by this thread I found those nasty pro mags and started fiddling around w them to see exactly what the problem was (it's been awhile). They actually fit in the rifle ok and I loaded them w 5 rounds and the first couple fed ok. So I guess I'll drag them back to the range downloaded and see if I can't get some use out of them.
