Default Looking for proper receivers

Hi there everyone. I'm right new at the AKfiles and just as new with AK rifles. I've always been an antique rifle guy but I guess these sturdy rifles have been around long enough that many of them ARE antique rifles. So my first leap of faith was to buy a Yugoslavian m72ab1 underfolder clone and Tantal kits. I may have been over charged at $900 for both, but they did come with nice barrels. Anyhow, to get with the posting, I would like to find a producer of a "bulged" receiver for my M72. I have a run of the mill blank for the Tantal already. I'm looking to jump right in, buy the tools, and build these suckers. I found several old posts, but all the links are dead, and Childers is the only Google approved search I came up with. Nice, but at $200 for the receiver I want, I thought I might be better off finding a flat to make myself. Anyone have advice for me or a place still producing RPK blanks?

Recreator has Yugo blanks and receivers now, and they are very nice. I got three blanks last weeks and they fit the trunnions like a glove

I'll probably go with Recreator 100% receiver for my RPK kit I just purchased.
They have the receivers in-stock so no waiting other than the snail mail.

That's just the advice I was looking for. Thanks guys. Any RPK specific building advice you want to drop in me?

Also, after looking at them, do the rails they offer have to be welded in? Won't that effect the hardening treatment they receive? Would you recommend the center support option? I'm ready to pull the trigger on this one. I like the products they have on the website.

The rails will need to be welded to the blank, but it won't affect the hardness of the receiver in any meaningful way. There are tons of AK's built on bent flats and blanks that have only been hardened at the fcg holes, so there's nothing you really need to worry about there. Or you could do like I did on my first build before I bought a welder and rivet them in lol (not recommended because it doesn't look as nice, they aren't going anywhere though).

Default Avoid Childers

Terrible customer service overall, but I did find a Yugo M72B1 receiver from childers on here by posting a WTB ad. It came bent, welded, riveted and ready to go for $90 from a private seller. Back about 6 months ago they were very hard to come by but I got my RPK all built now. Recommend going with what everyone else is saying too. If you're looking for a Yugo72B1 parts kit, I recommend ApexGunsParts. They have amazing kits for $370 (at the time, don't know if it's the same price now) without a barrel. Green Mountain has RPK heavy finned barrels for your build and also light barrels if you want to go with a standard 16" barrel without the bipod option. Those are best on the market as far as barrels for RPKs. Best of luck on the build !

Thanks for the advice. I hadn't considered posting a WTB on here. Brilliant though. I'm going to practice on a couple other kits first. Those finned barrels are so visually pleasing I'll have to go that route.

So, did you talk to Childers Guns or not?

Or are you telling us that Childers wouldn't help you with something you didn't buy from them?

I'm confused, as your post is the first one I've ever seen that advises against Childers ( so I'm wondering what actually happened )

Discount code "AKFILES" (all caps) will get you free shipping, and 5% off! I definitely can recommend Recreator, he sells both blanks and 100% receivers.

Thread concerning my experience with Childers, and my order from recreator blanks.

Yugo blank listing at recreator.

Definitely go for recreator!

Does anyone know "Matts" ID here? I'm going to go there and buy one but I don't see an option for Custom Number stamping. Maybe I missed it.

Email them directly with your info that you want done, and how you want it done, and then reference the order number when you order in a follow up email. Easy peasy. My markings turned out great.
