Default My RPK-74M is finally completed!

This has been a very long time in the making. I owe a big thanks to Pinakar for selling me the base rifle. This began its life as a Vepr 1v 5.56 RPK imported by IO. Thankfully they only imported it and didn't screw it up. The barrel is a K-var "Bulgarian" RPK-74 barrel from back when they had a few of them. I did have to source Bulgarian bolt to do the swap, and owe a shoutout to rstrobel for that one.

After all the parts were sourced, I got bids from and read reviews on several builders, ultimately choosing JBI Armory. Jim did an excellent job, communicated effectively, and got it back to me in a timely manner. Thanks Jim!

As Rob would say, "enough will the bullshit!" I present to you my RPK-74M:

And a thread like this would be useless without a video:

I have to say, I was as giddy as a school girl shooting today. I am absolutely in love with this rifle!

Her name, for a multitude of reasons most of you will surely understand, "Зараза"

Either SAW or MOE. I have a spare MOE somewhere, just can't find it at the moment.

It's not missing a thing. The PO3.5x21P is a fine optic, but I much prefer irons.

I've been asked through PM and on facebook so I'll answer here too. I have not had the opportunity to group and zero it so I can't give any numbers on accuracy. What I have done over the last 2 days is shoot cinder blocks, lavers, and granite slabs scattered throughout the ravine that runs through my property. I was hitting them effortlessly at any range from about 20m to 100m. Over the next few weeks I'll put it on paper and see how it groups.

Since the photobucket crash I've had to reupload all my photos to Imgur. The OP has been updated with the new photos. Enjoy!

I am curious, externally does it look different from when it began as a VEPR 1V? And speaking of those, i nearly had to beg people to buy those back when they were coming in in 2013. For a couple different reasons (ok relaly just 1, I.O.) not many people ever got excited about the model...very sad.

Externally and from a distance you'd never know it's been comverted to 5.45.

Up close and personal, there are differences. On the original 5.56 barrel, the barrel components were dimpled. They're pinned on the 5.45 barrel. Rsl and flash hider are different as well.

When they were first available, and cheap because no ome wanted them, I didn't quite realize what they were. I wish I had, I'd have bought 3 or 4. Several years later when they were unobtainium I started seeking them out. Still well worth the time and momey.

I can honestly say, i did my part to raise awareness of the VEPR 1V.
I even called I.O. and tried to tell them they had gold on their hands, if only they'd market it right. Two thing that stood out; their website said it had a 16.5" barrel and that it had a fixed buttstock.
If only they'd had the right info up and said 'hey this is an RPK74M type rifle.'

But they had 0 interest in doing any of that. They acted like they were forced to buy the VEPR 1Vs from Molot, and just had to sell them off somehow.

I replaced that odd muzzle brake that came on the thing with an original Russian birdcage too. Its smaller and just looks more appropriate.

Well IO aren't the brightest, NASA engineers or otherwise...

To their credit the stocks were welded open, so they might be considered "fixed"

I have that same kit ready to assemble. What is the going rate to put it together? I have all virgin parts except the used Bulgy front trunnion. NDS-8 receiver. I'm struggling to decide if I should build it with the fixed rear trunnion or the side folder like you did. I have two additional russian Molot front trunnions that have ugly demills if anyone is interested.

I cheated a bit by just having a Vepr 1V 5.56 RPK rebarreled in 5.45.

I highly recomend doing the side folder. I don't own an AK that doesn't have a side folder. The RPK-74M, folder is not my favorite, I much prefer an AKS-74 or AK-74M style folder.

To clarify, locked open, it is every bit as solid as a fixed stock. I just don't like the lock/latch mechanism used on these folders.
