Default any builds on tortort 80% milled receiver?

were there any build issues? did everything line up? Would you use a tortort milled rec. again? Looking for any/all useful info in building a tortort 80% milled yugo.

I have encountered no problems with Tort-Tort's receivers. I'm on my sixth from him with various builds from a Yugo RPK and under folder, Type-3 clone, and Galils. Outstanding product and not hard at all to build. Great guy to deal with too.

If you have access to mill it would speed things up. I did mine with a drill press, reamers, dremmel, files and misc. hand tools. I build as a relaxing hobby so I'm not in a hurry. You can use a Childers drill template or dimensional drawings that are available on Tort-Tort's website.

I have a couple of Tortort threaded Type 3's (a fixed stock and an underfolder) being worked on by Matt Yeamans(Turbothis). He is screwing in and head spacing the barrels, finishing the receivers and milling out and fitting the lower cover plate. Sounds like all is going well and he will soon be shipping them back for me to finish.

No issues with tortort. Period. If there is an issue, it's builder related or an unknown journal size issue related to the kit.

Dumb Q, but here it goes- can you build a stamped rec. kit on these?
What would you need to modify/ change out?

TIA,
r1FAL

The trigger guard and pistol grip nut are different.

The top cover may require slight fitting.

Buttstock is different.

Hand guard would require slight fitting.

Check the contact of the bolt carrier to the front of the receiver.

Knock the hump off the bottom and you can use the stamped stop and trigger guard just fine

Since the grip nut has been brought up... The type 3 used a riveted in grip nut as apposed to the AKM style that inserts from the top. I noticed that the current generation Tortort receiver has a squared hole rather than a rounded hole as (what I believe) the Type 3's had. Did Tortort do this so that a AKM grip nut could be used rather that the riveted grip nut?

P.S. I do not have a reciever yet so I cannot find out myself.

barmonkey, we went with the type3 milled hole instead of the square stamped to keep them close to original. The stamped type grip hole can be added by the builder if he chooses.
Thank you

Thanks for the clarification.

I was going by the pictures you currently have on your website. I noticed that some earlier threads posted about your receivers did have the type3 milled hole.

Yesterday, I picked up my two Tortort Type 3 Receivers, both with threaded barrels and receivers, as original. Matt Yeamans did the work on them and did an outstanding job. Both are now 100% receivers with headspaced barrels installed. Front pockets milled out with plates nicely installed. All milling done including perfect selector stops and sling swivel slot. Though I will add the Izhmash markings by etching, he added the requested serial numbers in the correct Soviet style and locations. I'm very pleased with his work! Now I need to finish up these builds.
If I could figure out how to post photos here, I would do so-- I'll see if I can figure it out.

Why not just upload the pics here so everyone can see?

IMGBB works fine.

Here is a link to the photos of my two Tortort Type 3 barreled receivers as received back from Matt Yeamans. They are further along now as I work to finish them off as time allows.

Thanks.

Please use a different host for your pictures. PhotoBkt is throwing out a bunch of pop-ups. I had to navigate to your entire album to find the pictures...

Actually, I was only polishing or smoothing out the lightening cuts on just the fixed stock receiver. The reason being that the lightening cuts on the fixed stock receivers were awfully rough. The lightening cuts on the underfolder were fine.

I did the smoothing before I sent the receiver to Matt Yeamans. It wasn't an easy job. Had to do it all carefully by hand with a custom made block so as not to alter any of the cuts' contours.
