I would assume culture is a factor too. Upbringing around a lot of stress and stressful situations would acclimatize someone at a young age to things that would ordinarily cause these issues.

It was made worse in WWI because of several things. Lack of experience with extreme pressure waves means that you are very sensitive to it, like a child. Your first experience was at a time when your life is on the line and people are trying to kill you to add a major psychological component to the experience. The severity of the bombardments and the lack of being cycled off the line as was done as often as could have been in WWII. So you were there and stuck there and suffered there till the combined effect creates a psychological break.

But yeah, we had plenty of guys in WWII who had the same behavior. But for propaganda reasons it was mostly swept under the rug and hidden. Plenty of WWII soldiers had severe PTSD.

I didn't get into the Psychological Component because I figured you already were accounting it. The psychology of WWI bombardment, Gas and Chemical Attacks, and the absolute breaking of the human sense of self preservaton to charge a machinegun is quite a stew.

Over time we understood more about the effects of war and so in training and after war and in the medical community steps were taken to help people and to limit the severity, if possible. Guys still suffered mental breakdowns and physiological breakdowns.

In a lot of ways you could call it Hysteria, because it is. That it is induced through physical and neural trauma makes it no less real.

In our day to day lives you can experience a little of the physiological side by going to a gun range where people are firing large caliber pistols and take a wall booth where the pressure waves are magnified by being reflected off the wall. After a while you will feel tired, exhausted, a little twitchy. You are suffering from a kind of sensory overload. If the exposure were more severe and other psychological components were applied (someone or someones trying to kill you)... you might experience a short term hysteria.

I harp on the physiological side because we are just now starting to understand the effects of high energy pressure waves on the human body. Medically we've found that it is significantly damaging and dangerous. That damage is "compound" aka more exposure, more permanent damage. That even a relatively weak wave, often enough will produce results similar to a higher energy wave in so far as causing actual detectable brain damage, from what aspect, we actually don't know because the compression isn't enough to actually apply pressure to the brain in levels to cause such physical damage. This is now a "new frontier" of medical science really. So yeah, those guys could just be suffering from simple hysteria induced by extreme traumatic experience or they may actually be suffering from brain damage.
Funny reading this, everytime I go to the range I'm starving and tired afterwards. I typically go to the last lane on either side next to the wall. I don't shoot "large" calibers depending on what is considered large, but I do shoot hundreds of rounds.

jm951: you probably know that the expression "undermining" is from the Middle Ages, when tunnels were built up to, then under castle/town walls. When the support timbers were burned, this was how they could cause a wall to collapse, allowing invasion. This was before cannons were developed.
I could believe it seeing the back pressure from AT4 and stuff like it. Anytime a large pressure wave hits the human body like that damage is being done. It's why explosions can reverberate of walls and kill someone even though they didn't see the explosion.

As a boy I remember a German man who my father supervised, and remember being told to never make sudden loud noises near him since he had shell shock. I was too young to understand what my father was attempting to tell me.

My adopted Dad said it was the smell of dead decaying humans that was everywhere all the time. You couldn't get away from it. Remember is some of the battles the French and Brits lost 50,000 troops in less then a week. In WWII it was called Battle Fatigue. Later the diagnosis of PTSD was coined.

Not what you are shooting but the other guys. Its the same reason why if you have an incoming explosive you move away from any fixed walls. Its a well studied phenomenon. Being against a wall when there is an explosion is much more deadly from the pressure wave effects alone, let alone being flung against the wall or the wall compressing then expanding and literally, the wall HITS YOU and breaks bones, etc.

not only was this the first time anythig like this was to be experienced on earth, a lot of the men with shooting experience had only used black powder arms(cartridge and muzzle loader), which is definitely a different animal

no one ever experienced artty like that, so there were no stories or any way to imagine and mentally prepare yourself

I could only imagine.
After the initial carnage you make it to a fox hole. Then wait and pray. I bet after an hour you are just waiting to die. After that your mind probably wrestles with the fact that your not dead
Serious mind fuck I'm sure.

Well most of the cases of PTSD are BS! Once you see the real case of PTSD it all comes into focus. One guy I knew way back in the 50's from WWI, still thought he was in France.

Seeing the ELEPHANT is a worldview changer. These asswipes calling for civil war here in America do not have a grasp on just what that means.
