Default M85np Made Mo' Bettah

Well...this is it. My final build. I'm hanging it up and I'm going to focus on saving money and finding a better house. I really wanted to push myself to do something new and outside my area of knowledge.

That being said, I spent the past two months studying and researching barrel making and lathe turning techniques. I have an old Atlas lathe that I bought years ago to putz around on, but never really researched how to properly use it. That all changed the past couple weeks.

My idea was to do 5.56 build with a 16.25" barrel that can run cheap Pmags, use a long Yugo Ultimak gas tube, and Krink rear sight. Basically a twin to my N.E.R.D (not exactly rifle dynamics) build. I'd like to say thanks to all you guys for sharing your builds in the past. It really helped with inspiration and forced me to continue to learn and grow in regards to expanding my mechanical abilities.

I started with a M85np

Then I took that fella apart.

I ordered a 5.56 barrel blank from Green Mountain.

Chucked up in the lathe. Let the learning curve begin!

The goal here is to recreate the original Yugo dimensions for the trunnion, and then recreate an AKbuilder 5.56 exterior profile for the rest of the barrel.

I cut the chamber by hand with a finish reamer. It took every bit of 4.5 hours. Twist, clean, measure, repeat. I realized how out of shape I've become. My core was sore the next day from all that twisting.

Next I had to recreate the ramping to the chamber.

I have no idea why some extractor cuts cross half the chamber face, and why some are at 90 degrees. I decided to just keep the original to be safe. Measuring, measuring, measuring. I cannot express how much measuring was involved with this project.

Pressed in and headspaced. Starting to look like something.

Handguard retainer placement was figured out, created, and then the barrel was placed back on the lathe to finish the exterior dimensions.

Assembled. I took it to the range and ran 100 rounds through it. It works

Someday I'll get a tax stamp for it, but until then, a fake suppressor will suffice. I drilled it out to remove all the extra weight I could.

The rear end wasn't to much of a project having done it before. But it is still a lot of drilling, welding and drilling.

Rear trunnion removed and new pilot holes drilled for the triangle folder.

I'm really happy with the way it turned out. It's all tight, right, and true.

After I took it to the range to sight in, I pinned the fsb, blasted and painted it. I must admit, it's pretty cool to be able to shoot widely available 5.56 and run cheap pmags in my preferred rifle style.

Cheers.

You guys absolutely can do this. I wear a shirt and tie during the day at work. My dad was a loser lefty and had zero mechanical interest. I became interested in mechanical things later in life and had to learn everything by researching, watching Youtube and trial and error. Never set limits on yourself.

Cheers.

Thanks Horse! I’ve always admired your products, and purchased a few of your mounts. They lock up tight and zero every time. Second to none in form and function.

Great build.

If you're going non-traditional do it right. And you, sir, did it right.

Out of curiosity, what is the accuracy like?
I have a 85PV SBR, accuracy is good but I wish it was better. Nothing to write home about.
I would venture to guess with the GM barrel the accuracy would be quite good.

I actually just got back from the range. Today was the first day I really put any effort on accuracy. Up until now it was all function/reliability and wear inspection. I wanted to zero it at 50yrds, but of course all the 50yrd lanes were taken. I didn't have much time, or ammo (only 40rds) so I just shot at the 25yrd lanes off bags with iron sights. The sticker below was my last seven rounds of Wolf Gold. I'll bet ya that a skilled shooter with an optic and good ammo could do alright with this rifle. I'm not very skilled.
