I would prefer the original magazines because they are made of aluminum and are lighter. Also, the VZ-58 has a bolt hold-open feature that is engaged after the last round is fired. This feature would not work with AK style magazines.

The only modification that I would recommend is to allow AR-15 style pistol grips instead of the VZ-58 grips. There is a very small selection of VZ-58 pistol grips and none of them are very ergonomic. I altered my VZ-58 to accept AR-15 grips and it was very easy. I can convert it back to VZ-58 grips anytime I want as well. Below is a picture of my VZ-58 with Venom Defense and Design pistol grip.

The best hand guard for the VZ-58 are made by North Eastern Arms but are no longer in production. You can find them on eBay from time to time.

I have not had any issues with them and the reason I use them is because they are lighter than the aluminum magazines.
