Default Another vacation gun buy!

I just have to stay out of places that sell guns while I am on vacation before I go broke and have to go home early.

Today I was in another small gun store and spotted two Chinese SKS's in their gun rack. Now, I am not particularly a Chinese gun guy (although I do have a few) and while I am certainly not a SKS guy, I can always be lured in by a low price. I was intrigued by the receiver markings on this one and at a sale price of $300, I decided to take a chance on it. The bayonet is missing, but I just happen to have one at home, so when I get back, I will marry them up. It did come with the cleaning kit, so while I do know that three bills isn't a killer price, from what I can see, it is certainly very fair.

Besides the factory [0140] mark, does anyone know what the chinese characters mean to the left of it? My Google-fu seems to suck today, because I can't seem to find anything listed that matches these characters.

All numbers match and except for some minor handling marks on the stock it is in excellent condition.

I think it translates to TYPE 56. I also got a factory 636 SKS for 299 out the door here locally. Also no bayonet so I now have to get one. Great find!

The chinese symbol for "56 is 五十六. I can see that the first symbol (very faint) is most probably a 5 and the second could be a six but I can't seem to find a listing for the symbol for "type". Not a big deal, I was mostly just curious.

In my neck of the woods chinese sks's go for 500. It's insane. Sks's with tapco stocks go for 600. They dont sell, but people ask ridiculous prices where I live.

3 bills for an SKS is a good deal in my neck of the woods. Usually they're $400+

I don't know why you should stay out of those places HP, I think you are doing great. Personally, I would quite easily pay 300 for a SKS, even without matching numbers etc. (well if I had the money...I don't think I even have that amount on my bank account at the moment...But I'm getting back on my feet) I mean if it's as nice as that and it works, I think it's quite good amount of rifle for the money. What do you get for $300 nowadays? In semiauto rifles for instance? Not so much I would guess... And I doubt there is any SKS made anymore........

I have wanted an SKS for a while now.

Intellectually, I have no problem going into new and different gun shops searching out deals. Financially, however, It is killing my bank account. There is hope though as I am going to be out boondocking for the next two weeks or so and won't be near any city that has a gun store.

Youíre like me. A trip to a gun shop usually ends up with filling out a 4473

$300 is a very good price for an unbubbaed SKS. They are getting very hard to find around here. I promised myself I would not walk away from a $300 SKS if I found one. I'm averaging one a year. Get some stripper clips and enjoy!

$300 is a good price for an sks. Also, did you get this one out of state? What are the rules for purchasing long rifles in store out of state..? as opposed to having them ship to an ffl

I live in Nevada, but am currently in Utah, which is where I bought the SKS. The federal rule is that you can purchase a long gun in a different state and receive possession. I donít know if the background check is a federal requirement or state, but the dealer did run one on me. Handguns, on the other hand, can be purchased, but must be shipped to a FFL in your state of residence.
