Default Which SKS would be more desireable?

I'm looking at 2 different SKS carbines

First One is a Keng's import Chinese Factory 416 SKS that appears unfired with the two character Security Forces or Public Security marking on the right side

Only down side is some black staining in the wood finish around some portions of the butt plate where it meets the wood. Water or something else reacted with the stock finish in places but no rust on the metal. Cosmetic only. Sling and cleaning kit present

Second one is a Romanian SKS dated 1960 which also appears unfired but has a correct but mismatched number Romy stock that also appears unissued. It may also have been refinished as it seems glossier than others I've seen. That rifle has the correct Romy D-ring sling and also has the cleaning kit.

Of the two, which would be more desirable?

Thanks, Mike

About equal, with a slight nod to the Romy if the sling is truly an SKS sling.
Romanians are very high quality SKSes.

The sling on the Romanian is one of the M-56 specific one with the roller buckles at each end and the large D ring (not the more common later AK/ PSL snap hook type). The finish on the Romy stock may actually be correct in terms of finish as there are some (presumably) original ones pictured here that do look similar:

You would not be unhappy with the Romanian.

If your going to be shooting it, it doesn’t matter, get the cheaper one. If you’re looking at an investment, get neither. The Chinese may have a pinned barrel if that means anything to you.

Thanks for the responses. Not sure if either are going to actually be sold yet.
Romy does seem to be the current favorite here and it is a really nice dark blue black finish. There is a second one with a un-numbered stock and gas tube. I now believe all 3 of these rifles were vertically stacked somewhere damp that allowed some moisture to collect around the lower part of the wood and buttplate. It seems to have affected the stock finish only, maybe about an 1/8" up from the metal, leaving various water marks. Still nice rifles though. I'll get some pics posted up.

I owned a few SKSs a while back.
The Romanian was my favorite.

Really it is all about condition, matching numbers, is it a refurb? $600 seems high. God I remember when these were cheap. I wouldn't pay more then $400 for an sks but that's me. Someone more knowledgeable will most likely post soon.

Now you should dispense with the lame stock and the lame scope mount. Glad you fucked a Yugo and not a Romie or Ruskie.

Personally, I feel the Romanian would be a better buy, depending on price. Someone that is looking for a Security Force Chinese might pay a premium for it, but to the average person, it's just another Chinese SKS. I would say $400-$450 for the Romanian is a fair price.

Romanians are nice, but $600 only if dead mint. And very few that came in were dead mint as I recall. I have a worn-to-shit 58 Romy but it shoots great.

Nice bling, but recoil is not a concern for 7.62x39.

First, I just must say, in my opinion, that is one of the most butt ugly bubba'd SKS's I've seen for a while, Saiga21308. That said, if it works for you and you're happy, it's your property and you have every right to bubba any rifle you own.

When people say that they are going to "upgrade" a military surplus rifle, all I can think is why are you throwing all that time, money, and effort at a rifle to make it something it was never intended to be (and if you ever would need to sell it, you've devalued it to MOST, but not all buyers unless you keep all the original furniture and don't mod it in a way where it can't be unbubba'd).

If you want higher capacity, an AK variant makes more sense to me than throwing money at special stocks and aftermarket magazines that don't have the best reputation. AK's were designed to accept standard capacity mags from the get go. If you want higher capacity and a long heavy barrel, RPK's are a much better option in my opinion, and so on and so forth. But again, it's what makes you happy in the end. The opinion of a stranger on the internet is just that, an opinion.

Also, I agree on the Romanian. If you can get it for $400 to $450, it's a pretty good deal for one in decent condition. For $600, I would want it to be extremely nice and I'd make sure the stock wasn't sanded (if the stock was arsenal refinished, I wouldn't have any problems with that).
