The barrel on MAK and other ban era AK's were turned down to eliminate the threads. If they measure .500" diameter thay can be threaded 1/2x28 and there are slant brakes and other AK style muzzle attachments made in the US to fit the rifles.

I just threaded a MAK barrel in 14x1 LH. Here's a link.

If the barrel measures .550" +/- it is good top go for 14mm x 1 pitch left hand if it measures much less or was turned down at opr near .500" it is good to go fot 1/2" x28 pitch, right hand..

I see you used an old stub as a guide vs a TAT. Not a bad idea and I have done similar with a tap using the cut off slant brake as a guide.
But a TAT is a good thing..., if you do not have a barrel stub or do not feel confident with the pencil and stub method.

The pencil was pretty close I only needed a wrap of tape to snug it up. Next time I will use a wood dowel. It will fit a little better. I never used a real TAT before so I have nothing to compare it to for ease of use but this worked pretty good for a first attempt.
