Just got back from a short trip to Springer Mountain, GA to drop two friends off at the beginning of the Appalachian Trail (they're hiking all the way to Maine.)

We hiked from a parking area to the summit of Springer Mtn, then to Three Forks shelter area where we overnighted. They continued north in the morning, I hiked back to my car...

...also, BE, it looks like Hill People Gear really makes some nice stuff. I like that front pack you got. I was considering getting one of those for when I do some backpacking + fly fishing trips. I have been eyeballing their website for a while but don't own anything of theirs yet. They have a youtube channel with some pretty informative videos.

OK, now that I'm back in civilization, and actually have phone service, let me get back to this post...

Boots: Regular work boots. I don't get special hiking boots, because work boots are heavier-duty, last longer, and offer better ankle support.

Tent: SnugPak Ionosphere. I'm not sure how I feel about this one--this is only my second outing with it. It's super nice, but IMO it's too big in my pack. I usually run a bivvy (SnugPak Stratosphere), so this thing feels like a mobile mansion.

Chair: Helinox...something. I made runners for the feet, so they won't sink into mud as much. I love this thing.

Pack: Eberlestock Gunslinger II
I love this pack. It holds 4 liters of water, and all of my junk...
(Please pardon my crappy pack-job in this pic...it wasn't fully loaded)

Anyway, I roll with some extra creature comforts. They aren't necessary, and I don't need them, but it makes these trips a little more enjoyable.

With no exaggeration, this thread has made me seriously consider moving to Utah. What kind of work is available out there?

we camp/hike in south Ga all the way to south FL. Just started getting really into it about 1.5 years ago. You gotta look out for hogs and gators mainly..... and fucking sandgnats.

Anything you F'ing want.

I can't hire anyone to save my life. Quality people are all working and if you poach someone they call you the next day and say their current boss offered them $2 more an hour more and a new position they have always wanted.

I can't find a girl to work my front desk and everyone I know needs people, construction is extremely desperate for people.

Finding housing is another problem, but temporary housing is easy. Town homes and really affordable and available, you will have a tough time finding a big lot, they don't exist in population centers.

I think I found a new home...

What about shooting out in nowheresville, like out where BE has been hiking? In Western WA the only long stretches are either private property or on the way to closing down.

Also, what about basic everyday costs? Gallon of milk, gas? Ideally I`d love to live on acreage like I do now but I realize that might get expensive.

I'm in AZ but Utah shares some of our same pluses when it comes to living in the West. By that I mean TONS of public land to do as you please. Just please pick up after yourself.

Housing is high-ish, but everything else is low to average.

You can find land but its way out, nothing in Salt Lake, Davis/Weber or Utah counties in the main areas. Your looking at at least an hour drive for populated areas for land.

nice pics! I cant wait to go camping! very jealous!

I've got some stuff I need to post here soon.

Cant ever get enough!

oh to answer the question work out here? In the basin there is a economic collapse out here and its part of the boom and bust cycle. So the place that was the fastest growing in the state suddenly went to 2x unemployment a couple years ago.

ha maybe someday I'll have a real shop out here and hire, that is what i really need. being a filer would be a plus on the application

You have much to learn padewon! Haha. I'm an avid hiker/camper. I do the "ultra-light" camping. Typically means my entire camp is in my backpack and it's ~ 16lbs for 5 days with food. Water I get during the hike using filter system. Now that it's warming up in Texas - can't weight to hit the desert mountains! I'll try and give a pack breakdown soon with some pictures.

Well hot damn that QD for your light is a great idea! I'm just now getting into weapon lights, I'll have to find me a setup like that.

I'm getting into some long(er) range iron sight shooting (only 3-400m until I get better) & wanna add a good range finder to my kit. Not only for ranging but also for observation, any good suggestions?

& maaan these pics out west make me miss riding out there. Keep 'em coming, I'm currently stuck in a motel in Ohio...

Went out for a day hike today for a friend. I promised her pics for her birthday, but after an injury at work and shitty weather, I only got a chance two months later. About an hour and a quarter`s walk down to the beach. The same pieces of driftwood have been sitting on that beach for 12-15 years, I`ve seen people build all kinds of things out of them.
