Default Galil Ace without the polymer

Does anyone know if the Galil Ace in 7.62x39 will function without the polymer 'lower' with minimal modification?
I'm asking this question in light of this post by Nails a while back.

It appears that one could install a trigger guard and use the same square nut as an AK to hold the pistol grip.
These mods seem like they would make this polymer portion unnecessary as well as make the Ace look more like the old Galil. Seems like the mag would still seat properly.

Anyone know if this is possible?

I haven't been able to find much on that mod but then again my google-fu is weak. You would happen to have any links up your sleeve to others doing this would you?

The only thing you have to do is rivet in a trigger guard and you are ready to go. This is my faux micro galil setup.

What hand-guard is that?

Will this mod work on the 556? If so what about the mags. Could galil mags work?

Thanks. Always wanted a micro galil but didn't like the caliber and proprietary mags. The ace was perfect.

That is a micro galil handguard. Found it on gunbroker but I think numrich might have them.

You don't need to rivet in a triger guard.

If you go Valmet style guard. You just cut a notch in the back of the mag release tower and bend up or buy a Valmet style guard, put in place and tighten down the grip.

No riveting needed.

I still need to get around to it. Too tired and too lazy I guess to bend up some steel and harden it.

Looking at images off google for the Valmet, it seems that the trigger tower on the Valmet is sig longer than the back of the trigger guard of the Galil.

How much does that polymer section of the Galil wiegh? Other than for cosmetics, why go through the bother and drop the resale value? Also increases the chances for side to side wobble of mags.

I find the Ace to be hideous. This mod makes the Ace into a looker.

The receiver is actually a micro Galil. Although that mod is excellent IMO.......it appears people who are future potential buyers that is if you ever decide to sell seem like they want the original configuration. FOR THE LIFE of me I can't understand why.........

Agreed!
If I ever get an Ace, this will be the first thing done to it.

It would seem that the Ace 5.56 which takes AR mags wouldn't have the front magazine lug that would be necessary for standard mags to lock in. [I say this without having one to look at to confirm this.]

Now, is their a fix for this? IDK. I've seen handy people do things that I wouldn't dream could be possible.

Nope. Not without serious mods.
Original galil and the ACE in x39 are rock and lock mag design.
The ACE .308 and 5.56 are straight insert. The mag catch is in the polymer lower.
Remove the lower and you have lost your mag retention assembly.
Different animals.

How can we be sure the tab is not still under there - like a vestigial appendage? I doubt it, but it's possible. No way to know until someone opens one up.

there is an appendage under it but it houses the AR mag release mechanism and helps reinforce the housing. To convert it to use old galil mags you would have to remove it, rivet in the proper mag release and then mill out the rec. you will also need to come up with 3 more US parts for 922r if that concerns you.
