Getting the musty out of mag pouches
I bought some heavy canvas Hungarian mag pouches but they came slightly damp and pretty musty. I scrubbed them with soap and water, put them in the dryer, fabreezed them, hung them by the fire and the dehumidifier, and they still smell and feel a little damp.
I don't know what else to do, any suggestions?

Try washing it in the Gentle Cycle with a MILD laundry detergent and a diluted fabric softener, then dry outside..
OR hand wash and soak in a wash tub and dry outside..

Why not try emptying a box of baking soda in a heavy duty bag with the pouch and shaking and rolling it around.
Let it sit for a day or three giving the baking soda time to absorb the smell.
You might could even dampen the pouch first.

I always thought the smell was part of the attraction to surplus.
I LOVE the smell of damp, musty canvas in the morning ...
It smells like ... bivouac.

Its not that I don't like the smell of surplus, its when everything around it starts to smell that way too.

Try using a cup of vinegar in a wash cycle without soap. Then wash as normal. Should take care of it.

you ladies should all be ashamed of yourselves!!
..posting laundry tips on such a manly website.
also drench the mag purses in diesel! i have no idea if it will kill the mildew, but diesel smells awesome AND tastes better than gasoline!
...kind of curious about the microwave thing, let us know if it works

I imagine if there is any metal on the bags it will arc in the microwave...but you can also wash in hot water and add half a cup to a cup of granular borax to the wash water. That will help kill any odors.

One box Baking soda, 1 bottle Peroxide... mix in gallon jug, fill with water... DO NOT CAP ! Use Instantly in basin, washing machine, or whatever....it will Eliminate ANY oder I have found.... Wash a dog in it after getting sprayed by a skunk and it's DONE. The chemical reaction looks cool, and works VERY well.
Also works Great in the shower before hunting trip, or for you ladies when your monkey is not smelling so fresh !

Pressure wash them at the car wash, and let them air dry. Another idea is to use activated carbon in a nylon and stick it the pouches. I have done that often and in time, it has helped alot on the collectable gear.
Also, keep in mind that most soaps, etc. will allow your gear to "Glow" under IR...so if you ever should consider such for SHTF, etc...then they will have to be treated.
