Valmet/Galil .308 mags

I purchased some .308 mags and found they will not work in a Valmet Hunter.

The mags are brand new, packaged in plastic bags.

The sticker on the bag is marked as follows:

GALB308
308 12RD GALIL NEW PREBAN
FACTORY ISRAELI MAG
MAGOH GAL

I would like to know what models these will work in and if anyone has mags for a Hunter M/88.

I believe the Valmet Hunter will only take Valmet Hunter magazines. It won't take any military magazines. I think the largest Valmet Hunter magazine holds nine rounds and there are five round Valmet Hunter magazines. There is a Valmet Hunter in 243 Winchester and 308 Winchester. They may or may not take the same magazines. there were some other calibers but they aren't common. The top receiver latch sometimes breaks or comes apart and gets lost. There was a company selling spare firing pins and firing pin springs and a few other parts but I'm not sure they around anymore.

Tony Rumore of Tromix Lead Delivery Systems can do quality, Galil mag conversions, to Valmet Hunter specs. Likely a waiting list for this service.

You can call or email these places. I used buy parts from Cape Outfitters which is now Jeff's Outfitters. The other place is in Finland so I don't know if they can ship to you.

Jeff Mayfield opened Jeff’s Outfitters in the fall of 2003. The inventory basis came from the purchase of the accessory line carried by Cape Outfitters. Jeff was/is very well versed in the inventory due to the fact that he worked at Cape Outfitters for 15 years under the mentorship of owner Don L. Shrum. After the unexpected passing of Don Shrum in January 2003, the inventory of Cape Outfitters was subsequently sold in August of that same year.

I never did any .308 Valmet conversions, only .223 conversions.

I stopped doing the .223 conversions about 5 years ago.

you probley got thos off gun broker, they will work unmodified in a Valmet 78 they just don't tell you that, which should get them evected but I don't think you can get someone evected from GB. The Valmet Hunter in .308 uses the exact smae mags as the Valmet Model 76 in 308. When Hunters were 1st introduced here they came with one of each 5, 12, 20 those are the only Valmet mags that have ever been avaliable going price on
5 $200
12 -200
20 - 300-400

you can very easly modify 12 and 25 round Galil mags to fit the hunter. I have done about 40 of them
all that is needed is to grind off a small amount of the sides at the rear of the magazine. It is one of those grind a little, test fit, grinnd a little till you get it to work, I have found 3 25 rounders that fit without grinding very tight but they do.
12s are around for 50-60 even though you sould buy 2 for $25 from CDNN a year ago and Blackthorn has 25s at the cheapest price in 5 years $100 each

Those sound like "White-Stripes" 12-rounders that came either singly (for $19) or locked in a Siamese pair-clip at ~$40 a pair… NOTE that these are not “blank-firing only mags” as opposed to some of the 5.56x45 models. They will hold and chamber 7.62x51 NATO ammo.

Nice mags for Galil .308 ARM owners – but still lacking if the 25-rounders weren’t stocked up on when they were available for $35 a pop. The 25’s are now fetching over ~$100 a pop… If I were still in the market, I’d fall back on CMI (Check-Mate Industries) M1A magazines and spend some time with a TIG wand. That's where the "original" .308 Galil mags came from.
