Great gun they were the poor man m16 why it's spot welded ...imop for the England model 900 is the max I go. The Japan or CA made guns command more

Check the mags it takes modded m16 mags . Org mags go for more . It takes like 1min to convert mags to work

The only issue people have is the front pin can break if you snap the gun open too fast but peopleske harder pins

It is the gun of the IRA .see the song .y little armilight

Whats the deal with the trigger and hammer pin holes. Did they weld the pins into the receiver? That's not good. Should have "C" clips on one side and large head on the other.

It's not weld, it's a rubber like material

My very first black gun was an AR-180, about Spring 1980, AR 15’s were hard to come across back in those days in my area, my gun dealer just happened to have a 180 with a factory Armalite scope and mount, I think I paid around $285-300 for it. All the ones that I have seen look like they could have been made in a high school shop class, back then high school shop classes were pretty well outfitted for metal work, I don’t know what they are like now. The silicone would kind of turn me off. There really is nothing special about them other then the Terminator and the IRA cool factor. They are interesting from a design standpoint. I do not think that I would be interested in buying another one at today’s prices, to me just not worth it.

I like that the AR180 had all of the cool features rifles tout today. Folding stock, piston operated, etc.

I'd love to have an AR-180 too. Most that I've seen have been $1200+. I'd buy if I had the money and lived closer.

It says strerling on receiver, right? Those are thought to be of the lowest quality out of the 3 original manufacturers. Costa mesa being the rarest. Still a nice rifle tho

I'd love to have a 180 but like Glashaus said, not at todays prices. Very interesting rifles, wish I'd been building when kits were still around.

On my list of wants.

Trigger/ hammer pins can walk out....c-clips are usually the fix. Looks like this guy glued 'em in.

I'd prefer a Japanese or American made one, but English made (most common) one would be ok.

That and the M16. IMHO For Urban warfare they were better armed than the British Army with their L1A1's. Standard FAL is a long heavy Rifle.
English needed a PARA version of their L1A1, surprised it never happened.

Silicone is the poor man's solution to keep the pins from walking.
Do not be afraid. If you can get it for the right price, they are stellar rifles.

The Ar-180/18 are cool rifles. I like them better then the AR15.. but the original has some poor design..in them.. the AR-180B was and is a great idea.. too bad is was abandoned.. by Armallite inc.. the use of the AR mags and FCG is a very good idea.. a plastic lover receiver is not... they were cheap..and the new ones were even cheaper..

Hi guys. I finally picked an AR180 up at the Mesa gun show some days ago. It was up for $1299 plus tax. I was allowed to take it home for $1200 total. It was made by Sterling for Costa Mesa. The serial number told me it was manufactured between 1979 and 1985. For some very weird reason, the previous owner removed the bolt hold open lever and the right side of the folding buttstock has a 1" x 1.5" shallow (0.40") recess very carefully hand crafted and in which a little (presentation?) plate had been fitted.
It came with a Sterling made 40 round magazine and the dealer will be posting me the other two mags - possible 30 rounders, but from another maker. I think I'd lake a few 20 rounders, so I'd take a few AR15 mags and modify them.
I suppose the next item I want/need is the scope but I've not seen them yet.

Does anyone have a clue where I could get a bolt hold open for this little beauty? All info very much appreciated.

The reason he removed the bolt hold open was that he broke it.
It was pretty easy to snap it in two, if you opened the gun and then pulled the trigger. The hammer would slam into the BHO and ...'snap.'

I wish i could help you find a replacement, but they are very uncommon and expensive.

Original magazines are either 20 or 40 rounds.
Sterling mags are steel, Armalite USA ones are alloy.

Is yours a painted or blued finish?

These are really neat guns, but I have to agree with the others...at current prices, I'd not bite.
I paid $600 for mine with 6 mags and factory sling.

These were pretty inexpensive back in the day, but hell so were Chicom AKs so that doesn't much matter.

The difference is that a Chinese AK is built tough and to last. an AR180 has a few very common failure points and/or parts that really can break. That wouldn't be so bad, except goodluck finding replacements.

Shame too.....if i knew i could get a spare BHO or FCG parts, I'd fire mine a lot more frequently than i actually do.
As it is, it remains a safe queen 11 months of the year....sad but true.

I've said it before, but the AR18 is the firearms version of the Velvet Underground.....and if you don't get that reference, ask your parents hehe =)

I have e-clips on my pins Armalite 180B.

I would like to sell it if possible:

mine has a folding stock assembly (Stormwerks) with AR style 6 position stock, comes with a Redfield 4-9x scope with original clamp on mount for the proprietary top mount.

PM me a reasonable price offer, with shipping to your area FFL.

The early AR-180's (Costa Mesa,Howa & Sterling) have a internal clip on the hammer and trigger pins to keep them from walking out... You'd not know it was there unless you were told about it...

A link to the AR-180 Jesus clip...

http://ar180s.com/tag/ar-180b/

Sterling started putting the pins with e-clips on their rifles in later production...

I'd rid the rifle of the RTV fix and make some clips to keep the pins from walking out...

Well busting out my inflation calculator, $300 in 1980 is the equivalent of $951 today so based on what the OP said he could get the gun for it would be the exact value you paid for yours back then.
