So today I got my acceptance letter for the EMT basic course. I will be starting in the fall. Im excited. Its been about 8 years I have been out the Army(21b) and about 5 yers I have been working BS dish washing jobs. Im so ready for a faster paced more adrenaline filled job. I mean I know it wont be like rounds smackin my humvee but it will still be more of a "in the shit" job than I have been having.
I took a CLS course in the Army way back in the day but I know I am outdated . I was just wondering if any of you medics on here have any tips for studying and taking the NREMT? I would greatly appreciate it. is can even be answered. Im sure its different from school to school Also, if is can even be answered. Im sure its different from school to school . About how long does the orientation last?

I visited your beautiful state yesterday, up in Shreveport. I'm really glad I had a hot streak the last hour. Ended up even but that's pretty good when you were $2K down.

You should. EMT basic is only a semester long and cheap . EMT paramedic is about a 2 year course and cost about 2k. Not bad and doesnt take 10 years to complete like some college classes

If you are going to take National Registry after passing your Basic course then you should download and start to memorizes these sheets.
http://www.nremt.org/nremt/about/psy...r_exam_emt.asp You will be tested on these countless of times and you will be required to know them top to bottom when you take your National Registry Skills tests. NR Skills is freaking easy as cake, the computer based "Written" is a bitch and when your a few weeks out from completing your Basic course let us know and I can turn you onto to a great web base study guide which includes NR like tests that guarantee's your passing. The best advice I can give you seeing as I've been in your shoes when it comes to tackling this stuff is to just remember your ABC's (Airway, Breathing, Circulation) & really focus on the Cardiac, Respiratory, & Pulmonary system.

Its definitely a mobile skill. There are ambulances everywhere. You could even take this skill the next level and head north,do remote rescue type stuff. I'd rather do that than be stuck in some inner city armpit slot.

I was a 68W2P. Got out in '07. NREMT wasn't too bad, but as someone stated before, focus on your ABCs. The "skills" aren't difficult, mostly it comes down to memorizing the "flow chart", i.e. "if X happens, Y is my intervention, with an expected result of Z".... and the link that "SB_Outdoorsman" provided is exactly what you need. Obviously the scope of practive greatly differs (military vs. civie- there wasn't much my PA wouldn't let me do) but the basics always apply regardless of your employer.
Most guys that I watched fail the course....... simply didn't study. Stay focused, and if it's something you really want, you'll be licensed before you know it. Good luck! And on a side note: I loved teaching CLS classes...lol.... particularly when we started I.V. instruction. We had more than a few "combat hardened" individuals.... but something about an 18 gauge catheter (and knowing they had to stick each other) made them turn pale in an instant...lol. |

Small world. I was with an engineer unit- 37th En Bn (C)(A) out of Bragg. I think they've since been deactivated and reconstituted as the 307th En, and lost their Airborne status. Anyway, great group of guys. I was a line medic w/A Co in OIF 1, and later OEF 7. Learned a LOT of great stuff from the Sapper platoon (that DOES not apply to the civie world...lol), and I taught them as much as I could. Honestly don't know if I could have had a better job... everyone was a brother that would do anything for you. Units really do take care of their medics.... but they'll push you out quick if you're a shitbag...lol... Man I miss those days...

OIF 1, good times... (sarcastic) Although I didnt have a lot of fun sometimes. I only remember about a quarter of my last day there in 03 .... 94th En Bn here. They have been moved aorund since I got out . I think they fall under the 4th MEB now. Im not sure could be wrong. Thats the last I heard. The Army loves changing stuff around. Its like Wal mart. They are re arranging almost every time you go in. Had quite a few SAppers. I was never one. I wish I could have had the chance to go . Sappers are bad asses . I dont know what a Sapper would teach you that WOULD apply in the civie world HAHA.

When I looked at joining the service in 75 (Saigon fell right about the same time) I wanted to be a door gunner on a Huey...
![]() Sapper would have been so much fun. ![]() Just to make it clear, I never served. Thought about it hard a number of time between 75-86 but never joined.
