I have done it in a similar way except I don't use the carrier. I just put the bolt in the locked position and I use tape on the "GO" gauge. Push the barrel in until the bolt is tight, remove the pressure, use a screwdriver blade to lift the lug, remove the tape and check it. If I need to bump it out I put a couple pennies over the chamber and use an aluminum rod to bump it out with a small tap with a hammer. If the barrel fit is good you can make pretty small adjustments with little effort.
