I sanded the wood down smooth with 800g, 1000g, and 2000g sand paper, mixed up some shellac (70% orange/30% Ruby red). put about 5 thin coats of shellac then two coats of tung oil. It matched the Russian grip very well. I got the shellac chips from www.shellac.net Hope that helps
