Csspecs Vepr-54R magazine thread

I'm going to open with the CAD render, understand that this is JUST a CAD render not an actual object.. The photo is not the clearest, for some reason when I try to get a JPG from the render the quality plummets. I'll work on it a little more but for now you'll get a rough idea.

I'll try to answer any questions you may have about them.
https://cdn1.bigcommerce.com/n-yp39j...g?t=1449525099

Magazine shown is a 15 round, it is roughly the size of a 30 round AK magazine. We are not entirely sure how well the 15 will work. We did several tests that showed that directly copying the geometry of the factory magazine and extending it does not work correctly, so the magazine geometry is significantly different on the inside vs the factory 5 and the SGM 10.

We are still a long way out from having actual magazines.

I will be doing progress videos showing the tooling being made and some of the work that goes into building a product like this. I'll post them in this first post as they are made.

NEED... Standing by with funds and guns... Been on this since first heard about you guys making them. Really wanna have a solid platform in the Vepr x54r. This is the answer. Please don't disappoint!

bounce19712 12-07-2015 06:43 PM

I can sell my OEM mags for a new car downpayment

bondmen 12-07-2015 06:45 PM

A very interesting thread and one many here are anxious to follow.

I want these real bad; will be a buyer when mags are ready for sale.

AKRAGE 12-07-2015 06:47 PM

HAHA I just posted about this in the gunsmith thread.

In all honesty, I don't think I would really like 15 rounds mags, not saying I wouldn't buy one. But 10 round mags will give you a bigger customer base. I know SGM sells them but yours being metal and more reliable you should knock SGM out the market if the price is right.

also to add to fact that rocking in a 15 round mag with a bipod set up like mine will be more difficult.

euphrates 12-07-2015 06:53 PM

I already have an erection

bounce19712 12-07-2015 07:07 PM

I'll cut a hole in my range bench for the 15 rounder.

eta: that photo is obviously shopped. :)

Pharoahs 12-07-2015 07:50 PM

I just popped a boner!! Keep them coming csspecs!!!

ddnc 12-07-2015 08:14 PM

I thought when first approaching this project way back when, it was to be a double stack, single feed mag.
Has that idea been scrapped? Logistics, geometric difficulties?

aceoutdoor 12-07-2015 10:05 PM

I am in for 20-25 mags if you make the 15 rounders. PLEASE do it.

SRG 12-07-2015 10:12 PM

Yes now I remember this. Look forward to the response from Csspecs.

genxgixxer 12-08-2015 12:28 AM

10 and 20 rounders would cover both ends of the spectrum

thearmenian 12-08-2015 12:33 AM

The 54R VEPR just doesn't look right with plastic mags, good to see this project moving forward.

Bad-Element 12-08-2015 12:36 AM

Nice!

We did extensive testing on the concept about a year ago. I don't think it is possible at this point. People asked many times about it since. I have been pretty reliable in saying that is an unlikely design to ever work.

I know SGM has been working on their design for several years without it coming out, they likely have much more R&D money to be able to chase the design.

It seems easy on the surface, just taper the top of the magazine and it becomes a single stack. However the stack of ammo is basically locked into the rounds below it, so how is it going to be pushed to the center?

We looked into a drum as well. But I kinda figured a 30 round drum for $200+ was not going to sell well. The above 15 round stick magazines are roughly as complicated as the M77 magazines, so the pricing will be fairly reasonable.

We looked into the pan drums as well, they seem doable but they will be expensive.. The front catch would have to be machined and made to tip out of the action reverse.

MitchKov 12-08-2015 12:59 AM

I'm ready when you are...tagged for future info.

"We looked into a drum as well. But I kinda figured a 30 round drum for $200+ was not going to sell well. "

I would buy one .........

GS455 12-08-2015 01:16 AM

I'd be happy with quality ten-rounders. 15 too long for shooting rest.

BAC 12-08-2015 01:22 AM

Photoshopping in my head, would a 20 round mag be about the same length as a 7.62x39 RPK mag?

Lord Ak-47 12-08-2015 01:23 AM

15 rounders the size of AK mags is great. A 20 rou d version and a drumwould just be icing on the cake. I would buy a drum for $200.

alaskaAK 12-08-2015 01:49 AM

WooHoo, lordie lordie, what a grand day...
All smiles here

It would be around that. However a 20 round magazine will probably low feed or rimlock. There is a limit to how long a magazine can be and still function correctly, especially with a rimmed round.

If you go too long the rounds rims will not 'fan out' correctly and the rims will have a much higher chance of rimlocking the magazine.

From what we can guess/design the factory 5 round is at the maximum fan out possible for 5 rounds, 10 and 15 rounds are pretty close to each other and 20 rounds only works if the ammo is rimless.

A side note. I found out that factory Vepr-54r mags have steel feedlips.. Did not know that before I sawed one in half to look at it.

Thanks for your efforts, I am a buyer when you have it ready!

Man, I would love some nice metal 5 rounders like the original. The shooting I do with my VEPR doesn't really warrant a 15 rounder. I'd settle for a nice 10 round magazine in metal though. Thanks for working on it. Hopefully you can offer a few different options when they production starts.

ddnc 12-08-2015 11:41 AM

As long as the 15 rounder is not too awkward that or the ten round mag will be fine with me but make sure to make a lot of them because when they emerge I foresee no body buying anything else. I'll be needing ten right off the bat and do appreciate that CSspec has taken this on.
